The graduation season of Sun Yat-sen University officially started on June 19. The schools and affiliated hospitals held postgraduate graduation ceremonies and degree ceremonies successively. The 2019 graduates of SYSU will keep Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s words in mind — “for the welfare of the society and for the glory of the country”, serve the country, and strive to realize the Chinese dream.

School of Communication and Design
On the afternoon of June 19, the School of Communication and Design held the 2019 postgraduate degree ceremony in the auditorium of the school. The school leadership, teachers, students and some graduates’ parents witnessed the solemn and warm moment. The degree ceremony was presided over by Professor Zhong Zhijin. Representing the supervisors, Professor Tao Jianjie gave a speech.

The postgraduate supervisors turned the tassel for every degree recipient and presented them with a graduation booklet. The postgraduates went onto the stage one by one, and took a photo with the supervisor. The supervisor and the postgraduate warmly embraced each other, and tears came out of their eyes. The supervisors were proud of their students who were about to work in different places. Their friendship touched everyone on the scene.
Professor Zhang Zhian, Dean of the School of Communication and Design, delivered a speech. He hoped that the graduates would grasp the opportunities and challenges in their development, keep the goal of SYSU’s talent cultivation in mind “to nurture students who have both ability and moral integrity, able to cultivate charisma and eager to serve the country”, enjoy the process of continuous reflection, and persevere in their pursuit of making great achievements.

School of Pharmaceutical Sciences
On the morning of June 20, the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences held the 2019 graduation conference and the 2019 postgraduate degree ceremony in 102 Lecture Hall of the Administration Building on Guangzhou East Campus. Professor Chen Xinzi, Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Honorary Dean of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Professor Hu Wenhao, Dean of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and professor representatives Huang Zhishu, Chen Zuanguang, Yang Depo, Bu Xianzhang, Zhao Chunshun and Wang Junjian witnessed the whole ceremony as officiating professors. Teacher representatives, all graduates of 2019 and some family members and relatives, a total of more than 400 people attended the conference. The School’s Secretary Yue Hui presided over the ceremony, Zhang Mengchu and Zhou Yixian gave a speech respectively as representatives of the graduates.
The graduates stood up to listen to the graduation precept written by Dr. Sun Yat-sen. When Dean Hu Wenhao read “work hard and be strong”, the graduates replied “follow your instruction”. Everyone present felt that graduation was both an end and a new beginning, with a huge responsibility to assume and a long way to go. Afterwards, Academician Chen Xinzi presented every master’s degree recipient and doctoral degree recipent with a graduation booklet and shook hands with them to express congratulations.

After conferring degrees, Academician Chen Xinzi gave an impromptu speech. He told the graduates “in the broad ocean, fish jumps freely; over the vast sky, birds fly cheerfully”, and shared his understanding of SYSU’s goal of talent cultivation. He said that “to serve the country” is the root for us; “to have both ability and moral integrity” needs a life time to practice; while “to cultivate charisma” will naturally display when we put our knowledge into practice and discipline ourselves with higher moral standards. He hoped that the graduates would be inspired and strive to achieve this goal throughout their lives.

Dean Hu Wenhao presented certificates to Guo Shiyao and 9 other students who have won the honorary title of “SYSU 2019 Excellent Undergraduates”, and presented Dai Chunmei and two graduates with certificates of appointment as the 2019 alumni council members.
The School’s Deputy Secretary Tan Haiyan led all graduates to recite the oath of the pharmacy major in order to remain true to their original aspiration.
School of Aeronautics and Astronautics
On the morning of June 20, the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics held the 2019 graduation ceremony and degree ceremony in the Swasey Hall on Guangzhou South Campus. SYSU Assistant President Liu Jike, the school leadership, supervisor representatives, all 2019 postgraduates and graduates, as well as dozens of graduates’ family members attended the ceremony. The School’s Deputy Dean Liu Kun presided over the graduation ceremony. Professor Fu Minghui and graduate Zhou Junxian gave a speech respectively as supervisor representative and graduate representative.
Assistant President Liu Jike read the graduation precept written by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and presented the graduation certificates. Dean Wu Zhigang shook hands, turned the tassel and took a photo with every graduate. When the graduate went on the stage, the screen displayed the student’s profile, making the scene more significant.
School of Chemical Engineering and Technology
On the morning of June 20, the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology held the 2019 graduation ceremony and the 2019 postgraduate degree ceremony in the multiple function room of the Library on Zhuhai Campus. The School’s Dean Li Weihua, Deputy Secretary Zhu Libin, postgraduate supervisors and all 2019 postgraduates attended the ceremony, and witnessed the happy moment.
Dean Li Weihua read the graduation precept written by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and hoped that the graduates would follow the instruction and shoulder social responsibilities. She turned the tassel for every graduate, and the supervisors took a photo with every graduate.

Professor Rui Zebao gave a speech as the postgraduate supervisor representative. He hoped that the students would keep the university motto in mind, form the good habit of continuous study, careful research, prudent thinking, clear discriminating and focused practice, and showcase the specialty and style of the “SYSU chemical engineers”.
School of Environmental Science and Engineering
On the afternoon of June 20, the School of Environmental Science and Engineering held the 2019 graduation ceremony and the postgraduate degree ceremony in B102 of the Administration Building on Guangzhou East Campus. The school leadership, faculty and staff, students’ parents and all graduates, a total of nearly 500 people attended the ceremony, and witnessed the glorious moment. The School’s Deputy Dean Sun Lianpeng presided over the ceremony. Graduate representatives Xie Yi and Chen Yingyan gave a speech.
Dean Qiu Rongliang extended warmest congratulations to the graduates on behalf of the School. He told them to grasp the ability to acquire knowledge, keep the ambition of improving the environment and changing the world, embrace the tests in their lives, and become great alumni of the School. He also wished the graduates a bright future. Afterwards, he turned the tassel for every degree recipient and presented them with the graduation booklet.
The School also set up the award of “Good Teachers in My Heart”. Professor Li Chuanhao gave a speech on behalf of the awardees. He reviewed his teaching experience at the School, sharing stories of friendship with the students, and expressing his best wishes for the graduates.
Before the graduation ceremony, the School organized activities for the “graduation carnival”. The graduates and supervisors walked on the red carpet and took group photos. They planted trees beside the school building, attended the graduation dinner, the graduation party and the lunch with the school dean. These warming up activities before the graduation ceremony enabled the participating teachers and students to look back at the university days, and look forward to the beautiful life ahead.

School of Law
On the afternoon of June 20, the School of Law held the 2019 postgraduate graduation ceremony and the degree ceremony in the Swasey Hall on Guangzhou South Campus. The school leadership, teacher representatives, administrative staff and 193 graduates attended the ceremony, and witnessed the happy moment. The School’s Deputy Dean Ren Qiang presided over the ceremony. Dean Huang Yao presented the graduation booklet, shook hands and extended congratulations to the graduates.
Professor Yang Xiaoqiang gave a speech as the teacher representative. He expressed sincere wishes to the graduates, and hoped that the students would remember their youth years at SYSU, remain true to their original aspirations, guard the social bottom line, and guard the welfare of the legal community. At the end of his speech, he encouraged all graduates to step on the new starting line and bravely explore their lives every day.
The teacher representatives took turns to go onto the stage and received flowers from the graduate representatives. As a symbol of the friendship between the teachers and the students, the bundles of flower showed the students’ gratitude toward the teachers. The School of Law also presented the school badge to every graduate. The school badge is valuable and significant, carrying the best wishes for the graduates.

School of Nursing
On the morning of June 21, the School of Nursing held the 2019 graduation ceremony and the postgraduate degree ceremony in the lecture hall of the Wing Sang Building on Guangzhou North Campus. Professor Wang Jianping, former SYSU Executive Vice President, first dean and present Honorary Dean of the School of Nursing, all 2019 graduates, heads of the nursing departments from practice hospitals, community practice teachers, all outstanding clinical teachers, as well as faculty and staff of the School of Nursing witnessed the unforgettable moment. The School’s Deputy Dean Zhang Jun’e presided over the ceremony. Associate Professor Li Kun, graduate Ye Xiangting and Chen Minjie gave a speech respectively.
Professor Wang Jianping pointed out that nursing is not only a skill but also an important discipline in medical education, which plays an irreplaceable role in medical education and medical work. He hoped that the graduates would have a correct understanding of nursing, stick to their goal and strive forward.

In the melody of the song “High Mountain and Long River”, the graduates put on the degree gowns and walked onto the stage. Turning the tassel, presenting the certificate, shaking hands, conferring the degree… these simple movements became beautiful moments and carried full expectations for the graduates.
Professor Peng Junsheng, Dean of the School of Nursing, extended warm congratulations to the graduates and expressed sincere gratitude to all the teachers and guests on behalf of the school leadership. He hoped that the graduates would keep the university’s goal of talent cultivation in mind, remain true to our original aspirations and pursue excellence. He also hoped that the graduates would remember the Nightingale Pledge, and keep the lofty career ideal, strive forward and make contributions to the healthcare of mankind.
All graduates stood up and solemnly recited the Nightingale Pledge, expressing their dedication to nursing and determination to carrying forward the nursing cause.

Zhongshan School of Medicine, School of Medicine
On the morning of June 21, Zhongshan School of Medicine, together with the School of Medicine, held the 2019 postgraduate graduation ceremony and degree ceremony in the Boxue Hall on the 15th floor of the Science and Technology Building on Guangzhou North Campus. The school leadership, supervisor representatives, postgraduates and their family members, a total of more than 400 people attended the graduation ceremony. Professor Yu Minbin, Deputy Secretary of SYSU Party Committee, attended the event. Professor Gao Guoquan, Deputy Dean of Zhongshan School of Medicine, presided over the ceremony. Professor Zhou Jiaguo give a speech as the supervisor representative. Before the ceremony, a video was played on the big screen showing the students’ graduation thoughts and the teachers’ best wishes, turning the graduates’ eyes to their unforgettable moments at SYSU.

At the ceremony, Professor Song Erwei, Dean of Zhongshan School of Medicine, presented the degree certificate to every master’s and doctoral degree recipient of Zhongshan School of Medicine. Professor Guo Deyin, Dean of the School of Medicine, presented the degree certificates to the 2019 doctoral graduates of the School of Medicine.
Dean Song Erwei delivered a speech on behalf of Zhongshan School of Medicine. He extended warm congratulations to the graduates and their family members, and expressed sincere gratitude to the supervisors. He put forward four requirements to the graduates: first, inherit the fine traditions of Zhongshan School of Medicine and achieve more innovation results; second, set up new goals to overcome the difficulties and solve the clinical disease problems; third, insist on innovation and climb the medical summits; fourth, take the lead in the development and make contributions to the healthcare cause of the mankind.

Dean Guo Deyin delivered a speech on behalf of the School of Medicine. He expressed gratitude to Zhongshan School of Medicine for its support to the construction and development of the School of Medicine, and sent best wishes to the graduates. He hoped that the students would carry forward the spirit of “cure the disease, the body and the mind, save the people, the country and the world”, pursue innovation and exploration, and make contributions to the Healthy China Program.
All graduates recited the Oath for a Medical Student, making a solemn commitment to taking care of life in their new journey.

The graduation ceremony was live broadcasted in the Boai Hall on the 15th floor of the Science and Technology Building on Guangzhou North Campus, allowing more family members, relatives and friends to watch the whole ceremony. Professor Yu Minbin, Deputy Secretary of SYSU Party Committee, came to the Boai Hall to meet the graduates and their parents and relatives, and sent his best wishes before the ceremony started.

School of Geography and Planning
On the afternoon of June 21, the School of Geography and Planning held the 2019 graduation ceremony and the 2019 postgraduate degree ceremony in the K.K. Leung Hall on Guangzhou South Campus. The School’s Dean Xue Desheng, Secretary Gu Xiaofeng, supervisor representatives, administrative staff, the 1987 Economic Geography alumni representatives, all graduates and their relatives, a total of nearly 900 people attended the ceremony. Secretary Gu Xiaofeng presided over the ceremony. The supervisor representative Associate Professor Chen Yimin, graduate representative Liu Junyang and Zhang Yuanying, and alumni representative Yu Haichao gave a speech respectively.
Dean Xue Desheng announced the decision by the SYSU Degree Evaluation Committee. The supervisor representatives presented the degree certificates to the master’s and doctoral degree recipients.

Dean Xue Desheng extended congratulations to all graduates and expressed gratitude to the teachers and parents. He said that the ideal for every university student should not be restricted to the individual, and instead, the students should turn their eyes to the country and the society. He hoped that all graduates would properly deal with the relationship between individual and society, between setback and growth, between position and responsibility. He encouraged the students to inherit the fine tradition of the School such as being firmly rooted, not afraid of difficulties and willing to make contributions, establish great ideals, and use what they have learned to change the world and benefit the society in the future.

At the ceremony, the School of Geography and Planning also commended the winners of “Excellent Class Tutors”, “Good Teachers in My Heart”, postgraduates who have published high-level articles, “Top Ten Graduates”, and recipients of the “1987 Economic Geography Scholarship”.
