Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center's 5G smart clinic tour serves over 150,000 people

On November 8, Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of Sun Yat-sen University, held a summary meeting for its "Bright Action to 100 Cities" in China on the campus of Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, as a tribute to the upcoming centenary celebration of the university.


Lasting 209 days, the medical team of the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center's 5G smart ophthalmology clinic tour has operated for more than 180,000 kilometers, covering 108 cities and villages in 28 provinces and autonomous regions across China, including Xinjiang and Xizang.

They have collaborated with 136 medical-related institutions and organizations nationwide, serving more than 150,000 people and screening out over 100,000 patients with eye diseases such as cataracts and refractive errors.

The service routes of this event included themes such as patriotism, inheritance, and development. Among them, the development route explored the application of emerging technologies such as 5G Internet+ healthcare and telemedicine, facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration, innovation, and mutual empowerment. The tour visited 57 cities, including  Kashgar in Xinjiang and Nyingchi in Xizang, helping over 500 patients regain their sight through surgery.

Zhu Kongjun, secretary of the CPC Party Committee of Sun Yat-sen University, stated in his speech that the 5G smart ophthalmology clinic tour has traveled across the country, bringing high-quality eye health services to people around the country. At the same time, it has also transformed the centenary celebration tribute event into an important force for promoting the realization of the "Healthy China" strategy.

Lin Haotian,  director of the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center at Sun Yat-sen University and the hospital's president, explained that the "Bright Action to 100 Cities" initiative links the eye health medical service network across numerous cities through various facets of medical education, research, and prevention. This initiative aims to broaden and make accessible high-quality medical resources, thereby bringing healthcare services directly to the people.

"In the process of practical application and promotion, we are committed to promoting and reserving related technologies. This is not only to serve our country's 1.4 billion people but also to play a role in future international medical cooperation and assistance," he added.

In addition, the event site also features activities such as a photo-op spot, an intelligent and fun amusement park, and 5G smart ophthalmology clinic tour inspections. Among them, the 5G smart ophthalmology clinic tour provides comprehensive eye health services to the public at the scene. Through the 5G medical dedicated network, the examination results will be instantly uploaded to the mobile eye health platform, enabling remote online film reading and immediate feedback.

The "Bright Action to 100 Cities" event was initiated in Guangzhou in November 2023, and officially kicked off in Shenzhen's Guangming District on April 13, 2024.
