Prof. Mathias FINK, member of French Academy of Science, visited ZOC and held International Masters Frontier Forum at SYSU

Invited by Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center (ZOC) of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) and Guangdong Provincial Ophthalmic Engineering Center, Prof. Mathias FINK, member of French Academy of Science, member of National Academy of Technology of France, founder of Langevin Institute, and Prof. Claude BOCCARA, co-founder of the Langevin Institute, member of the Scientific Committee, visited ZOC from Dec.1st to Dec. 4th, 2018.

Prof. Dan XIA, Party Secretary of ZOC, attended the Meeting Symposium on behalf of ZOC. At the symposium, both sides introduced the history, research conditions and development directions of Langevin Institute and ZOC to each other, and discussed the future collaboration backgrounds and directions. After a deep and pleasant exchange, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Langevin Institute, ESPCI Paris and Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, SYSU was signed by the two sides. Prof. Dan XIA, Director Jiawei WANG of the International Affairs Office, Director Jin YUAN and Prof. Peng XIAO of the Ophthalmic Engineering Center attended the MoU signing ceremony. The two sides reached extensive consensus on promoting the collaboration between Langevin Institute and ZOC, establishing a mechanism for regular visits, building a joint imaging research platform, and organizing Sino-French symposium on ophthalmic imaging technology.

Prof. Mathias FINK and Prof. Claude BOCCARA visited the Guangdong Provincial Ophthalmic Engineering Center, State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology and the Clinical Research Center. A discussion seminar on the development of new ophthalmic imaging technology and its application to ophthalmic researches and clinical studies was also held. Professor Jin YUAN, Director of the Ophthalmic Engineering Center, Prof. Xiulan ZHANG, Director of the Clinical Research Center, Prof. Xiaoyan DING, Director of the Pediatric Ophthalmology Department, Prof. Peng XIAO of the Ophthalmic Engineering Center, and Professor Jun ZHANG of the School of Electronics and Information Technology of SYSU attended the discussion seminar. In this seminar, the French team introduced the self-invented full-field optical coherence tomography technology and its potential applications in ocular disease diagnosis and postoperative follow-up. Through intense discussions, the two sides have deepened mutual understandings and clarified the detailed future collaboration areas.

Supported by the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange of SYSU, the International Masters Frontier Forum at SYSU was also held in the Swasey Hall on Guangzhou South Campus, SYSU on Dec. 3rd. Prof. Mathias FINK and Prof. Claude BOCCARA gave lectures on the theme of “Advanced Novel Biomedical Imaging Techniques”. The forum attracted teachers and students from various departments and was highly praised by the participants.

The visit of Prof. Mathias FINK and Prof. Claude BOCCARA confirmed the willingness of both sides to collaborate strongly. The two sides will jointly promote the development of new generation ophthalmic imaging instruments with high-resolution, providing cellular information for clinical applications in ophthalmology. The collaboration between the two institutes is believed to be an excellent example of Sino-French joint research in ophthalmic engineering field.
