From December 3rd to 6th, the 4th Zhongshan School of Medicine Academic Festival was celebrated on North Campus. Attendants include Secretary of SYSU Party Committee Zheng Detao, Vice President Li Mengfeng, Academician Yang Xiongli and Academician Hou Fanfan. Heads and representatives of various functional departments as well as over one thousand teachers and students from the schools and affiliated hospitals of SYSU participated in different sessions of the festival. Two delegations representing Basic Medical College, Xinjiang Medical University and Medical College, Tibet University for Nationalities also attended the event and were present throughout the festival.

Secretary Zheng Detao made three comments on the Academic Festival: the festival puts emphasis on overall planning and has rich and reasonable contents; the teachers actively involved themselves in the festival and showed great initiative to make presentations; the event has achieved positive effects since participants engaged themselves in reviewing, summarizing, communicating and improving their work. Secretary Zheng affirmed the achievements of the School and its momentum for development, and then offered three suggestions on its further growth. Firstly, the School should strive towards being number one on very single index and winning as many first places as possible. Secondly, it should put greater efforts into the cultivation of youth talents. Thirdly, it should go with recent medical trends and strengthen the combination or even the integration of basic medicine and clinical medicine. Finally, Secretary Zheng expressed his hope for a better festival and a bigger step forward in the development of Zhongshan School of Medicine.

Vice President Li Mengfeng commented that the academic festival has made itself indispensable in the life of everyone in the School. It has generated cultural significance and become food for the mind whose implications have gone far beyond expectations. Every participant in the festival is his or her own master, enjoying academic life in an atmosphere that is totally free of restrictions and pressure. Everyone in the School has a bounden duty to protect and promote this enthusiasm, emotion and lifestyle.

Experts from outside SYSU presented reports on special topics and made comments, including Academician Yang Xiongli, Academician Hou Fanfan, Professor Chen Liji from Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong, Professor Ma Xiaojing from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Professor Pan Guangjin from Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Li He from Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology as well as Professor Wang Nanping from College of Medicine, Xi’ an Jiaotong University.

The festival lasted for 4 days, during which several main events took place, including the signing ceremony of the research collaboration between Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital and Zhongshan School of Medicine, The Best Service Prize Award Ceremony, the plenary symposium, the parallel symposiums, the teaching symposium, The Alumni Day, youth academic salon, experimental technology salon and reports of school directors on their work. After poster presentations and expert reviews, several awards were made during the festival, such as “Experimental Technology Award (academic poster session)” and “Youth Academic Award (academic report session) ”.

Compared with previous festivals, this one is more enriched in content, more complete in form and attracts more enthusiastic participants. For the first time, delegations from partner medical schools were invited; a symposium for introduced talents was held; the symposiums were planned by Young Teachers Association; and undergraduates were invited to give reports. The festival was a huge success.
