Recently, the 19th annual meeting of the Chinese Urological Association was held in Guangzhou. Prof. Huang Jian from Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital was awarded the 2012 Wu Jieping Medical Science Award in Urology, which is the highest honorary award in urological field in China. The number of prize-winners was no more than two people every year. Another prize-winner was Prof. Zhang Wei from Jiangsu Province People's Hospital.

Prof. Huang Jian is the vice chairman of Chinese Urological Association, the vice chairman of the Urology Branch of Chinese Medical Doctor Association, and the chairman of Guangdong Urological Association. Being proficient in various advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques in urology, he is respected as one of the most famous laparoscopic surgery experts in China. He was among the first to perform laparoscopic radical cystectomy and orthotopic ileal neobladder in China. He has been invited to give many live operation demonstrations and lectures in several important international conferences, such as the World Congress Endourology (WCE), annual conference of Société Internationale d'Urologie (SIU), etc. He has long been engaged in basic and clinical research of minimally invasive urologic surgery techniques and urinary reproductive system tumors. He has presided over more than 20 national or provincial and ministerial level research projects. In 2009, he obtained the first prize in the Outstanding Achievement Award of the Ministry of Education of scientific research. In 2010, he was awarded the “Gold Cystoscopy Prize” of Chinese Urological Association. In 2012, with Prof Huang Jian being the academic leader, the Department of Urology at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital was selected as the National Key Clinical Department and Key Medical Discipline of Guangdong Province. He has more than 20 articles published in SCI, and he has published a monograph entitled Minimal Invasive Urology. He took the lead in formulating many occupation standard and national guidelines, such as Standardized Tutorial of Urological Minimal Invasive Techniques, Diagnosis and Treatment Guidelines for Urological Congenital Diseases, etc. Prof. Huang Jian’s winning the Award shows that SYSU has an important position in the field of urology in China.
