Guangdong Provincial Eugenic Health Education Research Base Set up in The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of The Sixth Affiliated Hospital

On August 13, Guangdong Provincial Population and Family Planning Commission initiated the “Guangdong Provincial Eugenic Health People-Benefiting Projects” in Guangzhou, and launched ten family planning and people-benefiting projects. At the launching ceremony, Guangdong Provincial Population and Family Planning Commission also started special collaborations with Sun Yat-sen University and Southern Medical University, and invited authoritative experts at home and abroad to act as advisers. On August 7 before the launching ceremony, a team led by Peng Junsheng, Deputy President of The Sixth Affiliated Hospital and Zhang Dikai, Director of The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of The Sixth Affiliated Hospital, signed a cooperative agreement with Ren Zhi Chu Magazine to jointly set up Guangdong Provincial Eugenic Health Education Research Base.

Professor Wang Jianping, Executive Vice President of SYSU, attended the ceremony. He said that Sun Yat-sen University has always had a fine tradition of caring for people’s livelihood and practicing medicine in order to help the public. SYSU will gather good talent resources of the university, especially the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of The Sixth Affiliated Hospital, and bring its research advantages into full play to jointly build Guangdong Provincial Eugenic Health Education Research Base wholeheartedly. SYSU will ensure supply in manpower, equipment and working arrangement to participate in, support and promote this people-benefiting project.

The aims of the Base jointly built by The Sixth Affiliated Hospital and Ren Zhi Chu Magazine are to organize well-known experts to offer 100 lectures on eugenics, compile a series of popular science books on eugenics that are easy to understand and well illustrated, produce eugenic health education films, and give 100 lectures in relevant counties (cities, districts), schools, enterprises and communities. Meanwhile, use the main channel of Ren Zhi Chu Magazine and other channels to popularize knowledge of eugenics, provide different levels of basic knowledge on sex and reproductive health and healthy personality education to young people between the age of 10 and 24. The 100 lectures on eugenics will proceed step by step. From September 2012 to September 2013, there will be a pilot scheme in selected counties (cities, districts). At the end of 2013, the pilot scheme will be evaluated and then the lectures will be steadily advanced and gradually spread across the province.

It is learned that according to the plan of “Guangdong Provincial Eugenic Health People-Benefiting Projects”, by 2015 the establishment of a eugenic health service system that is compatible with the social economy of Guangdong province, integrated into the population and family planning work, and consistent with the needs of couples of child-bearing age will be basically completed. The service awareness and service capabilities of population and family planning units will be raised remarkably. Free pre-pregnancy eugenic health check target population publicity coverage will be above 90%, screening rate above 80%, and scientific child rearing instruction rate above 80%. The danger of birth defects will be reduced evidently, and the birth of infants with severe thalassemia will be basically avoided. A free annual reproductive health check will be provided to women of child-bearing age, and the working mechanism and mode of early screening for common gynecological diseases in married women of child-bearing age will be preliminary established.
