The 2nd Workshop of the Migration and Health in China Project & the 4th International Academic Conference of Sun Yat-sen Center for Migrant Health Policy Successfully Held

From July 16 to 18, the 2nd Workshop of the Migration and Health in China Project & the 4th International Academic Conference of Sun Yat-sen Center for Migrant Health Policy was held in Guangzhou. It was hosted by United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) and Sun Yat-sen Center for Migrant Health Policy (CMHP), and funded by China Medical Board (CMB).

Roman Xu, Director of CMB Beijing Office, Sarah Cook, Director of UNRISD, Poonam Dhavan and Ellen Wong from International Organization of Migration (IOM), Bill Bikales, Chief of Social Policy and Reform for Children at UNICEF China, Geng Qingshan, Deputy Director of Department of Health of Guangdong Province, Lin Zhongning, Deputy Dean of School of Public Health of SYSU, Ling Li, Director of CMHP, Kinglun Ngok, Deputy Director of CMHP and Deputy Dean of School of Government of SYSU, Professor Shi Leiyu, Senior Consultant of CMHP from Johns Hopkins University, and about 60 experts and scholars from Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, City University of Hong Kong, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, China CDC, Peking University, Renmin University of China, attended the workshop.

The workshop was dedicated to the issue of “Migration and Health in China”, with a focused discussion on the first drafts of 16 papers and 5 commentaries completed under the theoretical framework of “Migration and Health”. The workshop was held in the form of theme leaders reporting on project progress and major findings, and commentators giving comments, which not only increased the coherence between papers and commentaries, but also synthesized relevant information conveyed by theses papers and commentaries. Moreover, the workshop set up a special session for dialogues and exchanges between researchers and policy-makers. Heated discussions led to a preliminary agreement to conduct cooperative research projects with government departments on migration and health policy making. During the workshop, Professor Ling Li, Director of CMHP, and Professor Shi Leiyu, Senior Consultant of CMHP, presented reports on the history of CMHP and the future development plan of CMHP.

Through this workshop, deep cooperation between CMHP and UNRISD, prestigious universities and research institutions at home and abroad was further enhanced, academic network of CMHP was consolidated and enlarged, research on migration and health policies in China was promoted; in addition, the research capacity and international influence of CMHP were strengthened.
