Recently, the deputy director of Nasopharyngeal Department, Cancer Center, Mai Haiqiang pointed out in his article published on Journal of the National Cancer Institute, a famous magazine in US, that compared with radiotherapy alone, concomitant chemo-radiotherapy improved significantly the overall survival rate, progression-free survival rate and free-from-distant-metastasis survival rate of patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma second stage. The research result was important for clinical treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma second stage.

This research, led by Mai Haiqiang, was the first to compare the efficacy of the concomitant chemo-radiotherapy with that of mere radiotherapy in terms of curing nasopharyngeal carcinoma second stage. It proved the importance of concomitant chemo-radiotherapy to treating nasopharyngeal carcinoma second stage, and had a major effect on clinical treatment.
