Recently, Peng Liang (first author), the attending doctor of infectious diseases department of the third affiliated hospital of SYSU and Professor Gao Zhiliang (Corresponding Author) published the paper “Autologous bone mesenchymal stem cell transplantation in liver failure patients caused by hepatitis B: short-term and long-term outcomes. Hepatology, 2011, 54(3): 820-828” in the renowned magazine for hepatic disease—Hepatology, whose impact factor has reached 10.885, making it one of the high-level paper ever published in the field of stem cell transplantation in clinical practice.
The study was first started in 2004, after a systematic basic research, it was approved by Guangdong Health Department and the Hospital Ethics Committee. In 2005, a new program called “self-extract mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from bone marrow to cure hepatology in later period” was started. After four-year’s follow-up visits and strict comparisons and researches , the researchers found that, compared with control group, transplanting autologous MSCs to cure liver failure caused by hepatitis B has been markedly improved, and the effects could last for 36 weeks. To those who have cirrhosis, the method helps to lower the risk of having liver tumor and the death rate. The published research result had a great influence at home and abroad. At present, the infectious diseases department of the third affiliated hospital of SYSU has been dedicated to the study of stem cells basic mechanism, clinical practice and the new way to cure hepatopathy. It is definitely a good news for many patients.
