On March 25, 2017, the 8th Pearl River Delta Inter-university French Speech Competition was held on Zhuhai Campus of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). Xu Jiawei, a student from the School of Foreign Languages of SYSU, was awarded the first prize.
As one of the important events of the French Festival in South China, the competition was undertaken by the Sino-French Institute of Nuclear Engineering and Technology (IFCEN) of SYSU. Mr. Jean-Marie Bourgeois-Demersay, the French Dean of IFCEN, delivered a welcome speech at the opening ceremony.

Mr. Bertrand Furno, the Consul General of France in Guangzhou, attended the event and delivered a concise speech, in which he expressed his gratitude to SYSU for its important role in the French Festival every year.
Through preliminary selections at the universities in the Pearl River Delta region, ten excellent contestants entered the final competition. They were from Sun Yat-sen University, The University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, The Education University of Hong Kong, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, and South China Normal University respectively. Focusing on the theme “Build a More Environmentally Friendly Future in Pearl River Delta”, the contestants displayed their commands of French language, social perspectives, and logical thinking abilities. After more than two hours of heated competition, Xu Jiawei, a student from the School of Foreign Languages of SYSU, won the first prize.
