My name is Dr. Gerard Kodjo ABASSA, also known as “Dashan,” from the Republic of Togo. I am currently pursuing a Post-PhD program at Sun Yat-Sen University (SYSU).

My journey at SYSU began in September 2006. That year, my parents decided to send me to China to experience a new culture and pursue my childhood dream of becoming a doctor. Initially, I planned to complete a five-year medical program and return home immediately after graduation. However, fate had other plans, and I ended up staying in China for nearly two decades, pouring my years and passion into this land.

After completing a two-year Chinese language program, I officially embarked on my journey toward a bachelor’s degree in medicine. This was followed by a three-year master’s program in internal medicine, and then a PhD program in gastroenterology. Finally, during my post-PhD training, I gradually mastered advanced techniques for diagnosing and treating gastrointestinal diseases, seamlessly integrating theory with practice.

Why SYSU?

SYSU, situated in China's southern Guangdong Province, operates across three campuses in five cities. I study and live in its Guangzhou campus—a city renowned as one of China's most prosperous and dynamic metropolises, offering an exceptional quality of life. Guangzhou boasts an extensive public transportation system, a rich and diverse culinary culture, and a unique blend of modern and traditional atmospheres, making it an ideal place to live. As one of the cities with the highest number of foreigners in China, it serves as the perfect platform for interacting with locals and embracing cultures from around the world. Additionally, Guangzhou enjoys a subtropical climate, with mild winters and warm summers, creating a comfortable environment for living and studying. More importantly, compared to other major cities in China, Guangzhou offers a relatively lower cost of living, making it an attractive choice for students.

Beyond rigorous medical training, SYSU offers students a variety of extracurricular activities. The university organizes annual trips across the province, allowing students to explore the breathtaking landscapes of China and experience the beauty of nature. Sports days are a highlight of campus life, where students, alumni, and faculty compete in various events, sweating and forging friendships. Additionally, regular alumni meetings help us understand the expectations and challenges of training, teaching us how to navigate potential pitfalls and ensure smooth academic progress. The vast alumni network not only provides graduates with extensive job opportunities but also promotes multi-center research, injecting continuous vitality into academic progress.

In 2020, the internal medicine team performs at the Spring Festival Gala and won first place.

Life in medical school is undoubtedly challenging, requiring significant effort and sacrifice. However, I can assure you that in the learning environment provided by SYSU, any diligent student can achieve academic excellence while enjoying a fulfilling and healthy personal life.
