Sun Yat-sen University Museum showcased its curated teaching specimens and interactive science activities at the main venue of Guangzhou's 2026 National Science Popularization Month and the 9th Guangzhou Science Carnival, held from September 5 to 6.
Under this year's theme, "Technology Transforms Life, Innovation Secures the Future," the museum brought natural science out of the campus, inviting visitors to explore biodiversity and scientific inquiry through immersive, hands-on learning.
Addressing public interest in traditional Chinese medicine quality, the museum featured comparative displays of authentic and counterfeit herbal specimens, including Cordyceps sinensis (caterpillar fungus) and Lycii cortex (wolfberry root bark). Guided by museum staff, visitors learned practical techniques to distinguish genuine medicinal materials from counterfeits by examining differences in color, texture, and morphology.
To promote marine conservation and food safety awareness, the museum also exhibited coastal crab species common to Guangdong. Complementing the displays were interactive challenges—such as matching seeds with their fully grown plants and solving symmetrical crab anatomy puzzles—which proved particularly popular among young science enthusiasts.
With public education at the core of its mission, Sun Yat-sen University Museum has, since opening more than one year ago, developed the "Natural History Academy" and organized a range of science outreach programs.
The museum will continue leveraging its collections and educational resources to bridge academia and communities, fostering scientific curiosity and enhancing public literacy across the region.
