SYSU Students Shine in the 15th National Collegiate Fencing Championship

The 15th National Collegiate Fencing Championship was held in Shanghai from Nov. 1-8, where 469 athletes from 28 universities were contending for the championship titles. The contest was divided into Group A, Group B, and Group C, with Group C targeting at professional athletes, Group B at college students admitted for their expertise in fencing(high-level athletes), Group A at outstanding athletes selected out of college students. 8 SYSU students participated in the championship in Group A and Group B respectively.

In the Group B contest, with agility and superb swordsmanship, Li Zhimin, a second-year student majoring in sports public affairs management and defending champion of Foil Fencing, defeated the veteran athlete, who had participated in National Games, and succeeded in retaining the foil crown. With a tough start of score lopsided against him, Wu Xinran, a new student from SYSU, competed with the contender, and finally claimed the championship title in the Epee Fencing with his stable mental strength and skillful swordsmanship. Xin Xin, a first-year student, took full advantage of her strength, and won the gold metal of Women Sabre Fencing.

Following the Fencing Championship, the 2009 annual meeting of Fencing Division of National College Student Sports Association was held in Shanghai from Nov. 9-12. Present in the event were Zhu Kongjun, SYSU Party secretary, Prof. Zhong Minghua, dean of the School of Education and secretary-general of Fencing Association, university leaders from more than 20 universities and presiding staff of membership units. Zhu Kongjun shared his ideas regarding workdevelopment centered on “cohesiveness, building, service, and promotion”.
