SYSU Students Shine in 2009 Citibank Cup’s Application of Finance and Information Technology Competition

On November21, the national final of the 2009 Citibank Cup’s Applications of Finance and Information Technology contest ended in Shanghai. The team Smarter of SYSU which consisted of students from School of Business and School of Software got the second prize (placed third in the national contest); the team Newsky of SYSU consisting of students from School of Software and International Business School got the prize for excellence; SYSU won the prize for best organization. SYSU struck a new success in the competition since the students of SYSU were participating in the competition for the first time last year.

The Citibank Cup’s Applications of Finance and Information Technology contest is a national competition; its purpose is to help students raise their awareness for the applications of the technology in banking and explore the challenges encounter in the face of current financial sector with acquired technology.

The contest holds every year since 2005. One hundred and eighty-two teams from thirty-eight universities had been drawn to contend for the competition titles this year; eight teams successfully came into the final after the preliminary contest and the semi-final.

SYSU attached great importance to the competition. Under the supervision of the Student Affairs Office and SYSU Youth Association, the youth associations of School of Software, School of Business, School of Information Science and Technology, and Lingnan College jointly have been holding the campus selective trial annually since 2008 in preparation for the national competition. The campus selective trial started in May this year; twenty-two teams consisting of one hundred and eighty-one students from School of Software, School of Business, School of Information Science and Technology, Lingnan College and International Business School were drawn to participate in the trial. The trial was concluded satisfactorily on October 30.
