In February, 2012, 58 teams from SYSU participated in American Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM), with an increase of twenty teams than last year. These teams were composed by students from different schools, including institutes of sciences, like School of Mathematics and Computational Science (SMCS), School of Information Science and Technology (SIST), School of Physical Science and Engineering (SPSE), School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (SCCE), School of Environmental Science and Engineering (SESE), School of Software (SS) and School of Life Sciences (SLS), as well as institutes of humanity, economics and management, like Lingnan College (LC), Sun Yat-sen Business School (SYSBS), International Business School (IBS), and School of Society and Anthropology (SSA).
The result of the contest was released at the beginning of April. Huang Yinhui, Chen Donglin, and Xu Qiuya, these three sophomores from SMCS, went into the final and were awarded the Finalist. This is the third consecutive year that SYSU students went into the final. 22 among 3697 MCM participant teams, less than 1% of the total number, are able to reach the final.
