SYSU English Debate Team Won Champion in National English Debating Competition

The Final of the “FLTRP Cup” National English Debating Competition was organized by the Central Committee of the Communist Young League, All-China Students Federation and Beijing Foreign Studies University, and was hosted by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP) and China Education Television. 96 teams from comprehensive universities and foreign language universities, including The University of Hong Kong, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University and Beijing Foreign Studies University, sent their teams to the competition. After eight elimination rounds of fierce competition, the winners were announced. The competition is conducted in the World Universities Debating Championships Style. Debaters have twenty minutes for preparation and the topics are related to various social issues. The competition is a challenge to the critical thinking of contemporary Chinese university students and it is the highest level of English debate in China. Finally, the SYSU team won the champion, the HKU team was the runner-up, the South China Agricultural University team and Beijing Foreign Studies University team won third place.

It is learned that next year the SYSU champion debate team will represent Chinese university students to participate in the World Universities Debating Championships to be held in India.
