SYSU Sub Camp of the National Youth Science Camp in Universities Launched

On the morning of August 6, the opening ceremony of the SYSU Sub Camp of the National Youth Science Camp in Universities (NYSCU) was held in Swasey Hall on south campus. Zhu Chaohua, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province, Lin Shujian, Secretary of the Children & Youth Science Center of Guangdong Province, and Zhu Kongjun, Deputy Secretary of SYSU Party Committee, attended the ceremony.
The science camp is organized by China Association for Science and Technology and the Ministry of Education, supported by Chinese Academy of Sciences, and it is hosted by Sun Yat-sen University, Guangdong Provincial Association for Science and Technology, and the Department of Education of Guangdong Province. The SYSU Sub Camp has 110 high school students, 80 of whom are from Guangdong and 30 from Guangxi Province. The 110 participants are divided into two camps: the Life Sciences Camp and the Chemistry and Environmental Sciences Camp. The camp members will study on the beautiful campus of SYSU for a week, attend lectures given by masters, visit scientific research facilities, carry out scientific and technological activities, communicate with SYSU students, and experience science, scientific research and college life before going to college.

Deputy Secretary Zhu Kongjun delivered a speech at the ceremony and extended a warm welcome to all camp members on behalf of Sun Yat-sen University. He said that the launch of NYSCU is an internal need of implementing the strategy of invigorating China through science and education and is helpful to further improve the comprehensive quality of the youth, and it is also an internal need for the university to fulfill its mission of talent cultivation, bring into play its advantages in scientific resources and enhance science popularization for teenagers. He hoped that the camp members will make full use of this trip of perception to experience the scientific spirit and academic attitudes of the university and develop problem awareness.
Deputy Director-General Zhu Chaohua said in his speech that the launch of NYSCU is an important measure to carry out the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” Implementation Program of the Outline of National Action Scheme of Scientific Literacy for All Chinese Citizens and the Outline of National Plan of Medium and Long Term Education Reform and Development (2010-2020), strengthen science popularization work, and improve the scientific quality of teenagers. Through interactions between universities and high schools, NYSCU bring into full play the functions of the university in disseminating scientific knowledge, scientific ideas and scientific methods, improving the scientific quality of teenagers, arousing their interest in science, guiding them to advocate science, encouraging them to make a resolution to engage in scientific research, developing their scientific spirit, innovation awareness and practice ability, and laying a solid foundation for the cultivation of back-up talents. Finally, he wished the science camp a complete success.
Student representative Guo Xuefei, from the Affiliated High School of South China Normal University, made a speech on behalf of all members of the science camp.
The flag presentation ceremony of the SYSU Sub Camp of the National Youth Science Camp in Universities (NYSCU) was also held. After the opening ceremony of the science camp, Deputy Secretary Zhu Kongjun gave a lecture on the history and tradition of Sun Yat-sen University to all camp members.
Chaohui, Deputy Dean of the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Guo Yan, Depurty Secretary of the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Lu Yongjun, Deputy Dean of the School of Life Sciences, Huang Yongping, Deputy Secretary of the School of Life Sciences, and Liu Zeyang, Deputy Secretary of SYSU Youth Association, also attended the opening ceremony.
