SYSU Fencing Athletes Got Great Results at the 18th National University Fencing Championships

Hosted by the Fencing Division of Federation of University Sports of China (FUSC), and jointly undertaken by Sun Yat-sen University and Shenzhen Wanguo Tianqi Sports Investment Co., Ltd., the 18th National University Fencing Championships was held in Shenzhen from November 5 to 8. More than 460 athletes from 36 universities nationwide including The University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Sun Yat-Sen University and The University of Macau took part in this year’s championships.
The competition consisted of individual and team events of Men’s and Women’s Foil, Epee and Sabre. SYSU sent 24 athletes to take part in the competition. Through their great efforts, finally they won both team champion and individual champion of Women’s Sabre, the runner-up of Men’s Individual Foil and the second runner-up of Women’s Individual Foil,earning 2 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze medals for Sun Yat-sen University.
Fencing has always been a traditional sport of SYSU with popular support and widespread social influence. SYSU established Fencing Association in 1981, and took the lead in classifying fencing as an elective course of public physical education in 1985. In July 1994, the Fencing Division of FUSC was founded and SYSU became its affiliated unit. Later on a high-level fencing team was formed and from then on SYSU’s fencing stepped onto the path of more standard and scientific development. SYSU organized the 1st National University Fencing Championships in 1990, and so far it has undertaken 14 National University Fencing Championships successively and produced a batch of fencing athletes of international level.
