The Sun Yat-sen University Summer Camp of High School Students in Rural Guangdong ran successfully from June 27 to July 3, 2016. The summer camp, hosted by Sun Yat-sen University, and undertaken by Lingnan College, attracted 106 students and 28 teachers from 34 middle schools in rural Guangdong. 30 excellent students of Lingnan College also volunteered at the camp. Activities at the camp included introductory courses on a selection of advanced topics, English practice, and recreational team-building exercises, all of which were aimed at broadening their horizons and improving their English and leadership skills.
The opening ceremony
On June 27, the opening ceremony was held in Lingnan Hall. Prof. Chen Min, Director of the Department of Education Administration; Ms. Wu Xiaofeng, Associate Director of the Undergraduate Recruitment Office; Prof. Lu Jun, Associate Dean of Lingnan College; Associate Professor Liu Hong, Director of the Lingnan Undergraduate Program; and Associate Professor Wu Yingxin of the Economics Department attended the ceremony. Director Chen Min and Associate Dean Lu Jun delivered welcoming speeches. They hoped that the students would seize the opportunity to experience university life and cultivate a sense of social responsibility.
The summer camp lasted for one week. In the morning, students took classes of different subjects including English, economics, mathematics, history, arts and literature. In the afternoon, they participated in extracurricular activities such as scavenger hunts, and visits to the Guangdong Museum, the Biology Museum and Chemistry Laboratory at SYSU, as well as South China University of Technology. In the evening, students enjoyed playing ice-breaking games, holding group study sessions, and practicing English speaking. This last activity culminated in an impressive English Speech Contest on the evening of July 1. 20 students competed in total, many for the first time, in the English contest. Judges and teachers remarked on the students’ confidence and enthusiasm to participate.
The closing ceremony
The closing ceremony of the summer camp took place on the evening of July 2. The talented students put on a variety of performances at the gala. They found it very hard to part with their peers and the undergraduate volunteers. On July 3, the students left the summer camp with an unforgettable experience that let them flourish as young adults. We hope that the students will aim high and make great contributions to the development of their hometowns and their country in their bright futures.
