SYSU Students Win Grand Prizes in 2016 “FLTRP Cup” Uchallenge English Contests (Guangdong Province)

On November 5-6, 2016, the “FLTRP Cup” Uchallenge English Contests (Guangdong Province) of this year was held in Guangdong Polytechnic Normal University. Four students from Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), winners of the campus contests, attended the contests. Three of them, Wang Zeyu (School of Geography and Planning), Zhang Mengmeng (International School of Business & Finance) and Wei Wei (School of Foreign Languages) won the grand prize in public speaking contest and writing contest, and will go to Beijing in December for the national final contest.

The “FLTRP Cup” Uchallenge English Contests include three component contests—Public Speaking, Reading and Writing Contests. It is a public service event jointly organized by the ELT Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education, the National Foreign Languages Teaching Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education and the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP) . This contest has gained great attention at home and abroad,  providing a platform for college students to demonstrate their English skills and challenge themselves.

In order to prepare for this contest, the Center for English Education at SYSU’s School of Foreign Languages carried out three tryout contests in the university since September 2016. Special instructor teams were organized to help the four students who stood out in the campus contest with their preparation for the provincial contests. In the end, SYSU contestants account for 1/3 of the total number of grand prize winners, who will attend the national final contest in Beijing.

SYSU finalists include both English and non-English majors. Their outstanding achievements show the results of the emphasis on talent cultivation by the School of Foreign Languages. The Department of English pays attention to cultivating English talents with a global view, humanistic concern and leadership. The Center for English Education aims at training compound talents —adding advanced English skills to those who have their own different disciplinary backgrounds.
