Sun Yat-sen University Won the First Prize in ASC17

On April 28th, 2017, Team SYSU won the 1st prize in the 2017 ASC Student Supercomputer Challenge (ASC17), the largest supercomputer contest in the world. Among 6 performance optimization tests, Team SYSU obtained 2nd place for the performance optimization of MASNUM, whose runtime was slightly longer than that of Tsinghua University but 4 to 100 times shorter than the others.

After tough competition in the preliminary round, 20 out of 230 teams of top universities from 6 continents fought their ways to the finals, which included Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Beihang University, Taiwan Tsinghua University and Uniwersytet Warszawski (University of Warsaw). Members of Team SYSU (Zhanfu Yang, Chenghuan Huang, Ziming Wu, Jiawei Zhang, Zixi Yan, Mingyang Lv and Xilong Chen) were from School of Data and Computer Science as well as School of Mathematics. Coached by Weicai Ye, Yongdong Zhang and Hua Huang from Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Computational Science, they turned all the passion into power and finally embraced their success after devotion and cooperation.

Team SYSU at ASC17
Team SYSU received many supports from relevant departments of SYSU as well as the research team of Prof. Yuesheng Xu and NVIDIA Corporation. In particular, the Lab’s GPU cluster “Nanfang Yihao”, which was used as Team SYSU's training platform for this competition, provided an important technical support.
