On May 14, 2016, the SYSU Dragon Boat Racing was held on the East Campus of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). 41 teams (16 women’s teams and 25 men’s teams) from 13 schools and departments participated in the racing. The organizer also invited two guest teams: the SYSU alumni dragon boat racing team, and the dragon boat racing team of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST).

Party Secretary Ling Chunxian, Director Fan Zhenguo and coaches Zhao Yunlei and Yang Lichun from SYSU’s Department of Physical Education, as well as Deputy Director Liu Shaoyuan and coach Wang Feng from HUST’s Department of Physical Education attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches.

In women’s group, two teams from Lingnan College won champion and second place, while the team from School of Law won third place, followed by School of Information Management, Sun Yat-sen Business School, School of Communication and Design, School of Public Health (Team One), and Xinhua College.

In men’s group, Sun Yat-sen Business School (Team One) won champion, and two teams from Lingnan College won second and third place, followed by School of Public Health (Team One), School of Communication and Design, SYSU National Defence Student Team, School of Engineering, and School of Electronics and Information Technology (Team Three).

After the race between teams from different schools of SYSU, the women’s champion Lingnan College (Team Two) had a friendship contest with the SYSU alumni dragon boat racing team. The final event was a friendship race between two SYSU-HUST Joint Teams and the SYSU National Defence Student Team.

At the closing ceremony, Prof. Miguel Nunes, Dean of School of Information Management, and Chen Fang, Deputy Party Secretary of School of Law, presented awards to the winning teams. The organizer also presented the Friendship Cup to the SYSU and HUST dragon boat racing teams.

After the competition, Prof. Luo Jun, President of SYSU, met with members of the SYSU and HUST dragon boat racing teams. He encouraged the students to work hard in unity and become talents who excel in both sports and study.
