Sun Yat-sen University obtained Application Innovation Award in ASC16

On April 22nd, 2016, Team SYSU won the First Class Award of the 2016 ASC Student Supercomputer Challenge (ASC16), the largest supercomputer contest in the world, and got the Application Innovation Award for the first time. During the competition of six applications’ optimization, Team SYSU ranked first on accelerating the de novo paired-end sequence assembling with ABySS, and second on optimizing the computation on materials science with ABINIT.

After tough competition in the preliminary round, 16 out of 175 teams of top universities from 6 continents fought their ways to the finals, which included Boston University (U.S.), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) and Tsinghua University (Mainland China). Members of Team SYSU (Hua Huang, Fan Xie, Wentao Xu, Jiansheng Cheng, Siyuan Liu, Guoqiao Ye, Chenghuan Huang, Zhanfu Yang, Ziming Wu) were from School of Mathematics and Computational Science, and School of Data and Computer Science. Coached by teachers such as Weicai Ye, Yongdong Zhang, Wenchao Guan from Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Computational Science, they turned all the passion into power and finally embraced their success after devotion and cooperation.
