SYSU students win awards in the 7th Pearl River Delta Inter-university French Speech Competition

On March 19, 2016, the 7th Pearl River Delta Inter-university French Speech Competition was held in the University of Hong Kong (HKU). Two students from Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), Chen Yanyu from Department of French, School of Foreign Languages and Huang Jingya from Sino-French Institute of Nuclear Engineering and Technology were awarded first and second runner-ups respectively.

As the first contestant on stage, Chen Yanyu elaborated on the connections among personal interests, external environment and the promotion of languages. She suggested the idea of establishing a center for French culture and Lingnan culture, and making use of communication channels like WeChat, radio, TV and subtitle translation group. She made the eloquent speech with the violin music in the background.

The Pearl River Delta Inter-university French Speech Competition is held each year during the French Festival, aiming to provide an opportunity for college students in Guangdong Province and Hong Kong to show their language competence and critical thinking. This year, the competition brought together nine contestants from universities including SYSU, HKU, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, and South China Normal University, to deliver a speech on the theme of "How may I promote the French language in the Delta region?" They were graded on language ability and logic by the judges, consisting of experienced French teachers and specialists.
