Sino-Russian Seminar on the Evolution and Development of Botanical Species of Eastern Asia Takes Place at SYSU

From November 24-29, “Sino-Russian Seminar on the Evolution and Development of Eastern Asian botanical species based on Paleobotanical Data” took place in School of Life Science of Sun Yat-sen University. More than 40 experts and scholars in the field of Paleobotany and Botany from Geological Institute, Institute of Botany and Far Eastern Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences, Jilin University, Lanzhou University, Sun Yat-sen University and other institutions attended the seminar.

The seminar carried out academic exchanges and discussions pertaining to Paleobotany and Botany. 23 expert and scholar representatives made academic reports in many study fields such as the origin and evolution of the flowering plants, the evolution of botany system and speciation mechanism, Paleophyto anatomy, Paleoclimatology, Quaternary Palynology, Florology and so on. After the seminar, the experts and scholars also made field survey on Guangzhou Huadu Early Carboniferous stratum and Phytolite, Shenzhen Museum of Paleontology, Xianhu Botanical Garden and Zhuhai Qi Ao Island mangrove ecosystem. Through academic exchanges and field work, Sino-Russian experts and scholars pointed out that scientists from the two countries have quite a solid cooperative foundation in the field of Paleobotany and Botany and they need to further develop their own advantages and strengthen exchanges and cooperation.

The seminar, jointly organized by the School of Life Science of Sun Yat-sen University, the Paleontology and Stratigraphy Research Center of Jilin University, the Geological Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences and co-organized by Provincial Nature Reserve of Zhuhai Qi Ao-Gan Island, received financial support from the Nature Science Fund of China and Russian Fund of Basic Research.
