Academician of American National Academy of Sciences Professor Patrick Lee (Li Yada) Visiting SYSU

From January 17th to 19th, Professor Patrick Lee, an academician of American National Academy of Sciences, visited Sun Yat-Sen University at the invitation of Sun Yat-Sen University. On January 17th, Professor Lee gave a public lecture “Quantum Magnetism and Superconductivity” on center of higher learning of Xian Weijian Hall, south campus, Sun Yat-Sen University. Later, Professor Lee had a informal discussion about the frontier problems of physics with the students and teachers from Technical Institute. The dean of Technical Institute, Professor Wang Biao gave a warm welcome to the attended people and invited Professor Yao Xindao to preside over the academic exchanges meeting. Professor Wu Daqi, faculty director of Physics of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology also attended the academic exchanges meeting, as well as some professors and teachers from other universities, such as South China University of Technology and South China Normal University.

On the morning of January 17th, accompanied by Professor Qiu Zhiren, Professor Patrick Lee has visited the state key laboratory of Optoelectronic Materials and Technologies of our university and exchanged ideas with the teachers of our university. Professor Lee has a good opinion of the achievement our university made at optoelectronic materials and technologies. During his visiting, Professor Patrick Lee and Professor Wu Daqi have discussed the further cooperation with Sun Yat-Sen University, especially the cooperation of theoretical physics.

Professor Patrick Lee has become an academician of American National Academy of Sciences in 1991 and now is a professor of William & Emma Rogers Department of Physics of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Professor Lee is the person in charge of the branch department of condensed matter physics, atom and biophysics and enjoys a high reputation on the educational circles of condensed matter physics. He has made great initiative contribution in the field of high temperature superconductor, quantum magnetism, disordered electronic system, mesoscopic physics, graphene and nanophase materials and won the Dirac Prize of International Theoretical Physics and the Oliver Buckley Prize of American Physical Society in 2005. In addition, Professor Patrick Lee is an experienced physical educator and has trained many outstanding scientists. The ancestral homeland of Professor Lee is Xi Hui of Guangdong Province.

This activity has received great support from Technical Institute of Sun Yat-Sen University, the state key laboratory of Optoelectronic Materials and Technologies, as well as Physics Society of Guangdong Province.
