Guangzhou, January 27，2010 (News Express): Provincial Governor Huang Huahua, and Deputy Governor Song Hai conducted survey and inspection at Sun Yat-sen University yesterday.

Mr. Huang pointed out that Sun Yat-sen University(SYSU) took firm steps in building itself as one of the first class and internationally-acclaimed universities in China in recent years, especially last year.

SYSU has vigorously implemented the strategy of strengthening the University through talents, and made a major breakthrough in building a high research group with high calibre. In 2009, Prof. Xu Ningsheng and Prof. Chen Xiaoming were elected academicans of Chinese Academy of Science among five newly-elected ones. 5 SYSU professors were elected Leading Scientists among 11 “973 Project” Leading Scientists, with number of newly-elected Leading Scientists only ranking behind Peking University and Tsinghua University.

What’s more, SYSU has also strengthened applied and and basic research, with scientific research strength enhanced rapidly. Last year, SYSU ranked 7th nationally in terms of number of newly-approved National Natural Science Projects and fundings, and 5th with 41 Humanities and Social Science Research Projects approved by the Ministry of Education.

Mr.Huang hoped that SYSU could set itself the goal of building itself as the first class university in China and even in the world, draw on the development experiences from the prestigious universities at home and abroad, and promote several of its disciplines to achieve first-rate level in China and even in the world.

Provincial Secretary-General Xu Shangwu and other presiding officials of related provincial government departments took part in the survey.
