Yang Mengheng: Star of Self-Improvement

A big hug

Yang Mengheng is a “special” student from School of International Studies. He lost his two arms as a child. With determination and optimism, he has completed four years of undergraduate education and has been recommended to study for his M.A. in English Language and Literature at Yunnan University.

When Yang Mengheng was receiving his degree on the stage, President Xu Ningsheng gave him a big hug and took a photo with him. Dean of School of International Studies Huang Guowen introduced that Yang Mengheng also won the title “Star of Self-Improvement of Chinese College Students”. Although he could not applaud to show his excitement and joy, “I can bow, hug or express my gratitude in my heart”, said Yang Mengheng.

Guo Zhongfei: Photographer

I have the president’s signature!

Guo Zhongfei is a master’s student from School of Sociology and Anthropology. “Many students say they can see the president in person only on the day of graduation. As a photographer in the Publicity Department, I’ve participated in many big events and have more opportunities to meet the president. I’m graduating and I want a signature from the president.” As the first graduate to have the president’s signature, he became the focus of the ceremony. Guo Zhongfei said in excitement, “When I stood on the stage receiving my degree, I could really feel the solemnity and sacredness of the ceremony.”

Ruan Yilian and Ruan Yihao: Twin Sisters

The twin sisters receive their master’s degrees together.

The twin sisters Ruan Yilian and Ruan Yihao are graduating from School of Government at the same time. Their master’s degree dissertations are supervised by the same professor — Prof. Xiao Bin. The twin sisters went to separate high schools and colleges, and worked in different institutions, but they became classmates again in their postgraduate education at SYSU.

I invite you to visit my hometown.

Where is my name?

The ceremony on the second day was chaired by Deputy Secretary Li Ping. She said to the graduates: “Today you have graduated, the alma mater cannot go hand in hand with you anymore, but will always watch you and support you!”

Thank you, professors!
