[Guangzhou Daily] Sun Yat-sen University leaps into world top 200 with social sciences ranked second in mainland China

The reporter learned yesterday that the 2015 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) was released recently by the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. 32 universities in mainland China are in the top 500 list, and 7 of them including Sun Yat-sen University are in the top 200. South China University of Technology is in the top 400. In the Social Sciences ranking, Peking University and Sun Yat-sen University are the only two universities in mainland China that enter the top 200.
This year mainland China has 32 universities in the top 500 list, and 7 of them including Tsinghua University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University, Fudan University, Sun Yat-sen University, and University of Science and Technology of China are in the top 200; 6 universities including Xi’an Jiaotong University, Nanjing University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Beijing Normal University and Jilin University are in the 201-300 band.
The 2015 Academic Ranking of World Universities shows that American and British universities still dominate the table. Harvard University remains the number one in the world for the 13th year in a row.
The 2015 Academic Ranking of World Universities by Broad Subject Fields (ARWU-FIELD) shows that Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Sun Yat-sen University and Fudan University are in the 151-200 band in the Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy ranking. For the first time Chinese universities enter the top 200 in the most competitive field of Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy.
In Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Peking University is ranked 43rd, University of Science and Technology of China and Tshinghua University enter the top 100; in Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences, Tshinghua University is ranked 12th, and 11 universities including Harbin Institute of Technology also enter the top 100; in Life and Agriculture Sciences, Zhejiang University is ranked top in the nation; in Social Sciences, Peking University and Sun Yat-sen University are ranked in the 151-200 band, and it is noteworthy that only these two universities in mainland China enter the top 200 in this broad subject field.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) has been presenting the world top 500 universities annually for 13 years. It is based on a set of objective indicators and third-party data, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of Highly Cited Researchers, the number of articles published in journals of
Nature and
Science, the number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance.
