Experts from Hospital of Stomatology accomplished medical mission in South Pacific islands

On July 16, 2014, at the invitation of the National Department of Health of Papua New Guinea and Guadalcanal Province of Solomon Islands, Guangdong Friendship and Medical Delegation visited Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands for a 10-day medical mission. As members of the delegation, Professor Lin Huancai, Associate Professor Li Tangxin and Zhi Qinghui from Hospital of Stomatology, Sun Yat-sen University, accomplished the mission completely. The friendship of Chinese people conveyed during the visit was hailed as an unprecedented success by the local government and people.

On July 17, the 11-member delegation arrived in Port Moresby, capital of Papua New Guinea, and went to Port Moresby General Hospital immediately on arrival. There, the experts treated dozens of patients, successfully performed a complicated surgery, and gave demonstration teaching to interns from Dental School of University of Papua New Guinea. The experts also delivered oral health educational brochures compiled by Hospital of Stomatology of SYSU to local patients. After the medical consultation and treatment, all members of the delegation attended a meeting with officer of the National Department of Health of Papua New Guinea and the CEO of Port Moresby General Hospital. The delegation donated dental instruments and materials to the hospital. The local media covered the events of the delegation and received a lot of attention from the public.

After visiting Papua New Guinea, the delegation went to Solomon Islands. The country has only one public hospital. The medical delegation had bilateral talk with local health officials and hospital administrators. The experts held focused education on oral health and delivered brochures and toothpaste to local people. Then the delegation donated large stocks of equipment and instruments to Guadalcanal Province to improve the dental care conditions of the local hospital. During the visit the leaders of the delegation also exchanged views with local governor on enhancing bilateral cooperation in various fields, including health care.
