NSCC-GZ Application Promotion Conference held in Guangzhou

On the morning of June 29, National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou (NSCC-GZ) Application Promotion Conference, cosponsored by Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), People’s Government of Guangdong Province and People’s Government of Guangzhou Municipality, was held in Guangzhou. Mr. Cao Jianlin, Vice Minister of MOST; Ms. Gao Ruiping, Deputy Director of National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC); Mr. Xu Shaohua, Executive Vice Governor of Guangdong Province; Mr. Chen Jianhua, Mayor of Guangzhou; Mr. Lin Ji, Deputy Secretary-General of the People’s Government of Guangdong Province; Mr. Wang Dong, Deputy Mayor of Guangzhou; Prof. Xu Ningsheng, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and President of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU); Prof. Su Qiang, Academician of CAS; Prof. Li Mengfeng, Vice President of SYSU; and Prof. Yuan Xuefeng, Director of NSCC-GZ, attended the conference. The attendees also included leaders of National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Ministry of Education, National Health and Family Planning Commission, Ministry of Public Security, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, as well as representatives of strategic cooperation partners and key users of NSCC-GZ.

The aim of the conference was to implement General Secretary Xi Jinping’s instructions on Tianhe-2. Xi said the success showed that China has gained a leading place in the world in this field. He encouraged scientists to make further contributions and achievements in a bid to help build an innovative country. The conference was held to accelerate the applications of Tianhe-2, explore market for supercomputer applications, promote development of related industries, and advance the integration of science and technology with economic and social development.

Tianhe-2 retained the title of the world’s fastest supercomputer for the third consecutive time according to the biannual TOP500 list released on June 23, 2014. At present, Tianhe-2, located in NSCC-GZ jointly built by Guangdong Province, Guangzhou City, National University of Defence Technology and Sun Yat-sen University, is open to users at home and abroad. Its fields of application cover life sciences, materials science, atmospheric science, geophysics, energy, cosmology, economics, etc. It plays an important role in big science and big engineering such as gene sequencing, biomedicine, pollution treatment, etc. It has been successfully applied in smart city, e-government, cloud computing, information service, etc.

At the conference, Vice Minister Cao Jianlin expressed the hope to speed up the development of Phase II system of Tianhe-2, and promote supercomputer applications and supercomputer industry to serve scientific, social and economic development.

Deputy Director Gao Ruiping said that NSFC will discuss possible collaborations and effective modes of support for Tianhe-2.

Executive Vice Governor Xu Shaohua said that Guangdong provincial government will support NSCC-GZ and hoped that NSCC-GZ will expand fields of application and make contributions to Guangdong’s industrial transformation and upgrading.

Mayor Chen Jianhua said NSCC-GZ will provide more extensive services and improve service functions, strengthen software and hardware construction, and enhance collaborations with the users.

President Xu Ningsheng said the “three schools and two centers” established at SYSU, namely, School of Advanced Computing, Institute of Advanced Computing, Research Institute of Big Data, Engineering Research Center for Advanced Computing Engineering Software of Ministry of Education, and High Performance Computing 2011 Collaborative Innovation Center, aim to cultivate urgently needed supercomputer talents with international vision, innovative spirit and multidisciplinary background, and provide talent and technology support for NSCC-GZ. He hoped that the distinguished guests from different fields and different industries would take the opportunity to discuss research and technical issues related to supercomputer, and promote the development of related industries with the help of NSCC-GZ.

Director Yuan Xuefeng introduced NSCC-GZ and signed an agreement with 8 strategic cooperation partners. Vice Minister Cao Jianlin presented the plaque of "National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou" and the plaque of “China (Guangzhou) Computational Science Service Center” to NSCC-GZ. Mayor Chen Jianhua presented certificates of appointment to members of the technical advisory committee of NSCC-GZ.

After the conference, accompanied by President Xu Ningsheng, Vice Minister Cao Jianlin and Mayor Chen Jianhua visited NSCC-GZ on East Campus of SYSU.
