On the morning of April 24, a group led by Chen Jianhua, Mayor of Guangzhou, visited SYSU and held a meeting on campus planning and construction of rental housing for faculty and staff. Zheng Detao, Secretary of SYSU Party Committee; Xu Ningsheng, President of SYSU; Li Shanmin, Vice President of SYSU; Zhou Yawei, Secretary-General of Guangzhou Municipal People’s Government; Feng Jun, Deputy Secretary-General of Guangzhou Municipal People’s Government; Li Junfu, Director of Guangzhou Municipal Land Resources and Housing Administrative Bureau; Li Ming, Director of Guangzhou Urban Planning Bureau; Liu Jie, Executive Deputy Mayor of Haizhu District; and leaders of relevant functional departments of SYSU accompanied Mayor Chen Jianhua in the field trip and attended the meeting.


Mayor Chen Jianhua led the group to visit the relevant plot of land on South Campus. At the meeting, after listening to the report by Vice President Li Shanmin, Mayor Chen Jianhua gave a speech entitled “Properly Dealing with Several Relations in the Development of Universities”. He pointed out that the development of universities should properly deal with the relations among historic buildings, existing buildings and new buildings; the relations between buildings for teaching, research, exchange and showcase and apartment buildings for faculty and staff; and the relations between the construction of a world-class university and the scale of a university. He discussed the development of SYSU’s three campuses in Guangzhou and the pressing issues to be solved, and offered valuable opinions on SYSU’s campus planning and construction.
