Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) continues its ascent in global academic standings. According to the latest Essential Science Indicators (ESI) data, SYSU’s Microbiology has entered the global top 1‰ (0.1%).

With this addition, SYSU now boasts a total of 14 disciplines ranked within the top 1‰ and 21 disciplines in the global top 1%. Overall, SYSU now ranks 6th among universities in the Chinese Mainland and 56th worldwide, rising one spot from the previous period.

Developed by Clarivate Analytics, the ESI is a premier analytical tool that tracks over a decade of research performance and citation impact across 22 scientific fields, and is widely adopted by the global academic community as a core benchmark for assessing a discipline’s international standing.

This milestone reflects SYSU’s strong momentum in microbiology, which is driven by frontier research, internationally recognized scholarship, and hands-on training that brings students into labs early.
