On the afternoon of June 23 (Beijing time), the TOP500 organization released the 43rd TOP500 list of the world’s most powerful supercomputers in Leipzig, Germany. Tianhe-2, a supercomputer developed by National University of Defense Technology and located at the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou on East Campus of Sun Yat-sen University, headed the list again for the third consecutive time. This is also the fouth time for the Tianhe supercomputer series to be the No. 1 among the world’s TOP500 supercomputers.
Tianhe-2, with a speed of 33.86 petaflops per second, has the features of high performance, low energy consumption, wide application, easy to use and cost-effective. Its comprehensive technology remains leading in the world. As the world’s fastest supercomputer, Tianhe-2 topped the TOP500 list twice last year.
According to experts, Tianhe-2 can enhance science and engineering computing and provide effective support for many kinds of applications including big data processing, high throughput and high safety information service, etc. As it is open to users at the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou, Tianhe 2 will provide a powerful engine for economic and social development, science and technology innovation, industrial upgrading in Guangzhou city, Guangdong province, the Pearl River Delta area and the whole country, and play an important role in comprehensively deepening the reform. The School of Advanced Computing and Institute of Advanced Computing have been set up in Sun Yat-sen University to foster supercomputing talents. The School of Advanced Computing will enroll its first group of undergraduate students this year.
