The opening ceremony of Mr. Chen Xujing’s former residence was held at the eastern square of the library on South Campus of Sun Yat-sen University on the morning of November 6. Attendees included Chen Chunsheng, Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President of SYSU, Li Ping, Deputy Secretary of SYSU, Zhang Zhanxia, former Vice Chairman of Guangdong Political Consultative Conference and Chairman of Alumni Association of Lingnan College, Lu Yonggen, former President of South China Agricultural University and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Li Baojian, former Vice President of Sun Yat-sen University and Chairman of Guangzhou Alumni Association of Lingnan College, Cheng Huanwen, Director of Sun Yat-sen University Libraries, Zhang Wenbiao, Secretary of Lingnan College, Shao Dongfang, Asian Division Chief of US Library of Congress, Qiu Qi, East Asia Library Operations Manager at Stanford University, friends of Mr. Chen Xujing, representatives of Mr. Chen Xujing’s family Ms. Chen Suixian, Mr. Chen Qijin, and Ms. Chen Yuxian. The ceremony was presided over by Deputy Secretary Li Ping.

Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President Chen Chunsheng highly praised the profound academic achievement of Mr. Chen Xujing and his outstanding contribution to the development of higher education in China. He hoped that the opening of Mr. Chen Xujing’s former residence will help further inherit and carry forward the precious academic and spiritual legacy left by Mr. Chen Xujing.
Ms. Chen Suixian, daughter of Mr. Chen Xujing and Mr. Chen Qijin, son of Mr. Chen Xujing gave their speeches on behalf of their family, extending gratitude to departments and individuals that had participated in the renovation and opening work of Mr. Chen Xujing’s former residence. Moreover, along with all the attendees, they immersed themselves in the deep recall of the study, life and work of their father right in this little building. They thought that the opening of this former residence was the best way to remember their father and had a very special meaning for them.

At the ceremony, on behalf of Mr. Chen Xujing’s family, Ms. Chen Suixian donated the certificate of appointment of Mr. Chen Xujing as the vice president of Sun Yat-sen University from Premier Zhou Enlai in 1956 and the certificate of National Book Award for Collection of Studies on Ancient History of Southeast Asia by Chen Xujing to SYSU library, and decided to store many famous original manuscripts of Mr. Chen Xujing in SYSU library for the convenience of students. Library Director Cheng Huanwen, on behalf of Sun Yat-sen University Libraries, presented a letter of appreciation and Lifetime Photos of Mr. Chen Xujing to Ms. Chen Suixian. The guests paid a visit to Mr. Cheng Xujing’s former residence after the ceremony.
Chen Xujing’s former residence
Mr. Chen Xujing’s former residence is located in No. 319, northeast area of Kangle Yuan where Mr. Chen Xujing worked in Lingnan University and Sun Yat-sen University from 1949 to 1964. Right here he finished Collection of Studies on Ancient History of Southeast Asia by Chen Xujing, the million-word academic work which enjoys a high reputation in the academic world both at home and abroad. The school decided to restore the original study of Mr. Chen Xujing with photo exhibition of his academic studies, life and work to better remember him.
