The National Eye Institute (NEI), a division of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), has recently established the “NEI Chan Ophthalmic Pathology Collection” in recognition of Dr. Chi-Chao Chan, a Scientist Emerita of NEI and a Visiting Professor of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center (ZOC) of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), for her distinguished contributions to the field of ophthalmic research.

Collection Overview
Named after Dr. Chi-Chao Chan, the collection archives all pathological slides curated by Dr. Chan during her tenure as head of the NEI Pathology Core Laboratory from 1985 to 2015. It encompasses clinical specimens, high-resolution digital images, and corresponding patient medical and ophthalmic records.
This NIH initiative honors Dr. Chan’s pioneering contributions to immunopathology, ophthalmic science, and U.S.-China scientific collaboration, while establishing a valuable global resource for ophthalmic researchers.

A 1967 graduate of Sun Yat-sen University School of Medicine, Dr. Chan advanced ophthalmic research at the NIH-affiliated NEI for over three decades, publishing 695 papers and driving international efforts against eye diseases.
Beyond her academic achievements, Dr. Chan selflessly gives back to SYSU by actively participating in alumni relations overseas, the centennial celebrations of Sun Yat-sen University, and talent development programs at the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center.
Since 2017, Dr. Chan has spearheaded a U.S.-China lecture series on ophthalmic pathology and clinical practice. To date, the series has hosted 30 sessions, featuring 128 expert speakers from both nations, attracting thousands of attendees globally, and generating profound impacts within the international ophthalmology community.
At the 2023 APVRS-APOIS Congress in Hong Kong, Dr. Chan was honored with the "Honorary Award for Promoting Global Ophthalmology Collaboration" during a special forum dedicated to her decades-long contributions to international ophthalmic cooperation.
We extend our warmest congratulations to Dr. Chi-Chao Chan on this momentous recognition of her groundbreaking contributions to ophthalmic science. We are deeply inspired by her scholarly rigor, visionary leadership, and selfless commitment to advancing global eye health. As we honor her legacy, we pledge to uphold the standards of excellence she has set—fostering international collaboration in ophthalmology, driving innovation in research and clinical practice, and ensuring China’s ophthalmic advancements continue to align with global frontiers. Through these efforts, we aim to carry forward her mission of improving ocular health for all, ensuring her profound impact endures for generations to come.
