A total of 15 Chinese universities have made it to the top 100 of the 2025–2026 Best Global Universities rankings, up from 13 last year, according to data released by US News & World Report.

Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) is ranked 85 globally and 8 in the Chinese Mainland.

The latest edition shows China topped the overall rankings with 397 universities, followed by the US with 280, India with 118, Japan with 104 and the United Kingdom with 93.

The annual rankings assess 2,250 universities across 105 countries and regions based on more than a dozen indicators, including global and regional research reputation, publications, books, conferences, normalized citation impact, and international collaboration.

"The Best Global Universities rankings provide valuable benchmarks for students considering international study options or seeking institutions with a strong global research impact," said LaMont Jones, managing editor for Education at US News.
