On October 15, 2015, the 8th SYSU Clinical Research Salon was held in the Lecture Hall of Wing Sang Building on North Campus, attracting more than 100 doctors, teachers as well as medical students. Hosted by Prof. Chao Cheng and Prof. Yan Guo, the salon invited Prof. Minghuang Hong from the Sun Yan-sen University Cancer Center to share his knowledge and experience in clinical research.

Prof. Minghuang Hong sharing his experience in clinical research

Graduated from the medicine department of Sun Yat-sen University in 1991, Prof. Hong’s research interests include clinical stages, comprehensive treatment and the early detection and treatment of nasopharynx cancer, etc. According to Prof. Hong, his early study and working experience in the School of Public Health of SYSU, undoubtedly, has contributed to his familiarity with statistical techniques in his later research fields.

Based on his clinical experience, Prof. Hong explained the importance of clinical researches in the salon. Afterwards, he also shared his idea on clinical decisions, which is a vital stage in clinical treatment. From Prof. Hong’s opinion, in evidence-based medicine, translational medicine or precision medicine, “giving each patient the most suitable diagnosis and treatment” through the correct clinical decision should be the essence of clinical research.

Later in the discussion section, Prof. Hong communicated with young doctors and statistical researchers, sharing his precious experience accumulated in the past decades. It is worth noting that he gave young doctors many useful pieces of advice on how to identify good clinical research topics and further work on them. Moreover, he emphasized that young doctors’ clinical research cannot be detached from the real clinical practice.

SYSU Clinical Research Salon is an academic activity initiated by the visiting fellows of the SYSU-JHU Collaboration Program. They hope that the salon can bring the advanced study method and positive research atmosphere to SYSU and serve as a bridge to connect all the faculty members who are interested in clinical research. The academic salon is scheduled to take place on the first Wednesday of every month. Online videos of the salons are also available on the website: http://lecture.sysu.edu.cn/.
