The International Society of Biomechanics (ISB) held its 25th annual conference at Glasgow, Scotland recently. A Three-Minute EDC MicroGrant Competition was conducted during the conference. Recognizing that sustainable solutions to challenges in Economically Developing Countries (EDCs) are initiated by local researchers and collaborators, this competition is intended to support innovative ideas while raising awareness about related challenges within the ISB community. Projects as proposed are intended to employ biomechanics to address challenges in an underrepresented community, provide biomechanics training and education in EDCs, and/or foster biomechanics growth in EDCs. Project leader should give a 3-min presentation during the conference for the competition.

Our Sun Yat-sen team, led by Dr. Le Li, Associated Professor of The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), got the highest score and won the first prize of the competition.

The title of the project is “Free Your Body”, and the team members are Dr. Le LI (EDC-contributors, ISB membership number 4486) and other student helpers, P&O staff.

This project aims to provide free 3D motion analysis to low income people with disability who want to assemble or evaluate a prosthesis and/or orthosis at a teaching hospital at Guangzhou, China.

The objectives are twofold: apply biomechanical analysis for people needed; and provide education and training to undergraduates, prosthetists and orthotists who want to enroll in this project.

Budget use: 44 dollars of each examination and administration fee will be supported by EDC grant, inclusion criteria for the subjects are based on documents of low income certificate; We try to do as much as we can depend on the fund; Surface EMG electrode, tapes, skin cleaning supply for the examination; Printings of posters, or leaflets to the communities to introduce this project to foster biomechanics of EDC.
