On the morning of April 23, 2015, the Infectious Disease Center (IDC) in The Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University (Zhuhai Infectious Disease Area, ZHIDA) was fully put into use after nearly three years of construction and commissioning. Thus it has changed the previous small and scattered pattern of infectious disease control in Zhuhai city.

The Infectious Disease Center in The Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University comes into service.

As the only IDC in Zhuhai, the construction standard is in a leading position in Guangdong province. The IDC is not only dealing with common infection patients, but also able to prevent sudden major infectious diseases. It now has 200 hospital beds, of which 116 beds (including those for children) will be put into use in the first phase. This will greatly relieve the pressure of infectious disease control in Zhuhai.

Due to the special nature of the IDC, the exhaust gas is safely discharged by using negative pressure, which will prevent secondary pollution to surrounding environment.

With first-class medical team and the support of a wide range of disciplines in the comprehensive hospital, the IDC can provide quality and efficient medical services (means) to patients. The IDC will create a one-stop service from clinic to routine examination or hospitalization to facilitate patient treatment.

Invested by Zhuhai municipal government, the IDC is a major project to benefit the people. The IDC built in The Fifth affiliated Hospital is managed by the hospital at ordinary times, while medical services will be purchased by the government in case of outbreaks of infectious diseases, which is an institutional innovation in Zhuhai.
