School of Foreign Languages (FLS), Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), seeks to recruit foreign language instructors to offer courses in listening, speaking, writing, literature, etc., in English/German/Japanese.
The school enjoys a history as long as that of the university itself. It originates from the Department of English Literature in 1924, which was joined by the Department of French in 1957, the Department of German in 1958, and the Department of Japanese in 1978. In 1992, the Department of Foreign Languages (including English, French, German, and Japanese), Guangzhou English Language Center (GELC), and the Center of Chinese Training, merged to form the School of Foreign Languages.
Center for Foreign Languages Education (CFLE), School of Foreign Languages, Sun Yat-sen University, is looking for foreign senior instructors (retired associates/professors or associates/professors on sabbatical leave) to teach Academic English (esp. writing)/ translation/ Business English to undergraduate/ postgraduate students of non-English majors and English majors.
English/German/Japanese instructor, education
- Teaching load:
An average of 10-12 sessions per week (45 minutes for one session, 18 teaching weeks per semester). The yearly teaching load is between 360 and 432 teaching sessions.
- Other responsibilities:
Offering at least one required course and one optional course;
Tutoring/coaching students in English/German/Japanese contests and competitions.
Native (-like) proficiency in English/German/Japanese;
B.A. degree or above in languages, linguistics, literatures, education, cultural studies, or other relevant humanities subjects awarded by renowned universities in English/German/Japanese-speaking countries;
A minimum of two years’ teaching experience (Applicants with a degree in education, linguistics, or other relevant disciplines, or in possession of a TEFL certificate, are exempt from this condition);
Physically able to meet the requirements of the job;
Age: from 28 to 58 years old.

The Center for Foreign Languages Education provides high-quality English instruction to non-English major students at three separate university campuses located in Guangzhou, Zhuhai, Shenzhen. Highly qualified and dedicated teachers at the Center for Foreign Languages Education help students achieve English proficiency and prepare for academic success.
Guangzhou campus, Zhuhai campus, or Shenzhen campus
1. Weekly teaching load: 14-18 periods of English courses to undergraduate/postgraduate students. A single period, or one teaching hour, is 45 minutes as required by the university.
2. To individually create and develop a course based on the needs of the CFLE and the teacher’s expertise.
3. To schedule after-class time to meet with students for questions from students. This should include two office hours twice a week.
4. To participate in teaching, research and other related service work and other social work required and assigned by CFLE.
Monthly salary: pre-tax salary 9667 RMB / month (starting from September or March).
In addition to the monthly salary, a yearly bonus shall be paid based on successful completion of the required teaching hours and contribution to the academic development of the university.
The foreign language instructors who work full time are periodically located in Shenzhen or Zhuhai Campus. They will receive an additional work allowance to cover associated expenses e.g. travel.

Since its founding in 2005, the School of International Studies (SIS) has aimed to develop high quality foreign language programs and area studies courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. With a special emphasis on international faculty, SIS now has 19 foreign language instructors employed from different nations like the U.S., the U.K., Spain, Jordan, South Korea, Russia and Portugal.
The courses offered by SIS are designed to allow students to improve their foreign language proficiency and, more importantly, gain a better understanding of the nature of languages and cultures.
1. 16 periods of weekly instruction in the EFL program (45 minutes per class period);
2. Teaching Academic English, Verbal Communication, Writing, Translation, and culture-oriented courses to undergraduate and/or postgraduate students of English;
3. Planning, teaching, and evaluating assigned classes in accordance with SIS;
4. Facilitating testing during each course, including marking tests and grading assignments;
5. Fulfilling teaching duties as required and/or requested by the SIS;
6. Participating in professional development programs such as course coordination meetings, open discussions, and seminars;
7. Participating in program activities, such as training, orientation, workshops, placement tests, etc.;
8. Organizing and participating in on- and off-campus activities and events (English corner, speech contest, etc.);
9. Keeping 2 office hours per week to advise/counsel students who may need extra help.
Monthly salary: 9667 RMB (pre-tax)+stipends (2500 RMB, pre-tax )

12-month contract (from September 1, 2020 to August 31, 2021)
-Who are English native speakers;

-Who are creative and flexible to adapt to an experiential approach to teaching;
-Who are sensitive to cultural differences;
-Who can teach more than one subject with a total of 16 periods a week;
-Who can work with other teachers at the Writing Center to help students with their English competence for academic and professional purposes;
-Who can assist in material development and work with other teachers to organize workshops for the SIS Teacher Professional Development Program.
