Professor JI Liangnian now serves as the professor at the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Sun Yat-sen university in Guangzhou, P.R.China. He was elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2003, and chart chem. F.R.S.C. (London) in 1989. He is also the member on the editorial board or advisory board for 3 international and 5 national chemical journals. He held the posts of president of the Guangdong Provincial Chemical Society (1992-2009) and vice director of Inorganic Chemistry Committee of Chinese Chemical Society (2000-2004).
In the international arena, he took charge of many international cooperative projects, including: National Natural Science Foundation of China and Swiss National Science Foundation, the studies of binding of metal complexes to DNA (1990-1991, 1995), the second session of the Chinese-Greek joint commission for S and T cooperation, the studies of interaction of antitumor drugs with DNA (1993-1994), the 7th session of the Chinese-Greek joint commission for S and T cooperation, the studies of interaction of metal complexes with DNA (1998-1999), and so on. He has been elected more than 10 times to work as the general secretary, vice chairman and member of organizing committees or advisory committees in sponsorship of international conferences or symposia on the bioinorganic chemistry field.
By profession he has studied in bioinorganic chemistry for more than 30 years. Based on his work in synthesizing a great amount of small-molecule coordination compounds, the interaction rules between the different composition and different structure of coordination compounds with the DNA was systematic studied and summarized by thermodynamics, kinetics, theoretical calculation (such as the density functional method) and other methods. The main ligand planarity and their area size of coordination compounds, including many other structure factors, the influences rules for interaction modes and the stability between coordination compounds and DNA were also systematic summarized. Many model enzymatic systems of potential application prospective, including, more than ten new synthesizing methods and technical routes were suggested by him and his research group. In the field of synthesis of new types of coordination compounds with enzymic functions, and metal model enzymes, including studies of their structure, properties, and applied research or molecular design, he and his group have succeed in synthesizing more than 600 new coordination compounds in the three systems of metallic poly-pyridine, metallic-porphyrin and metallic-macrocyclic coordination compounds. He has been invited more than 30 times to work as a specially invited lecturer, plenary lecturer, keynote lecturer and invited lecturer to report these results in important bioinorganic chemistry field relative international conference.
So for, he has been engaged in teaching work in universities more than 50 years and has given lectures more than ten basic courses and specialized courses for undergraduate and graduated students. He has trained and guided 61 Ph D. graduated students, 35 master graduated students, 5 post-doctors, 2 foreign visiting scholars and 5 domestic visiting scholars including the present in reading students. He has published about 600 research papers cited by the SCI. The papers were cited another person more than five thousands times. He was the chief editor of three monographs, and 16 Chinese patented invention rights. The prizes he has received include a prize conferred by the National Science Conference; three first-grade prizes, five second-grade prizes and two third-grade prizes from the provincial and the ministry awards for S &T Progress; a second-grade prize bestowed by the State Educational Committee for compiling outstanding text books Bioinorganic Chemistry An Introduction (the first edition, 1992). And the third edition was published in 2010; two first-grade prizes from the provincial awards; and a second-grade national prize granted for outstanding teaching accomplishments. In particular, 12 honor prizes have been granted to him from the national, provincial and ministry governments for his outstanding teaching and science research results.
