XU Zhizhan

XU Zhizhan is presently a professor at Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (SIOM) at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He served as director of SIOM from 1992 to 2001, and is currently chairman of the Academic Council of SIOM. He is also chairman of the Academic Committee of the State Key Laboratory of Optoelectronic Materials and Technologies, Sun Yat-sen University.

Prof. Xu has made outstanding contributions to laser physics, optical science and plasma physics, particularly to laser fusion, high power lasers, laser-plasma interactions, X-ray lasers, high field physics and ultrafast optics. He was elected Member of CAS in 1991 and Fellow of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) in 2004. He is also a Fellow of the Optical Society of America and has served as vice president of the Chinese Optical Society from 1993 to 2012. He is the founding Editor and Editor-in-Chief of the journal Chinese Optical Letters. As the first winner, he has won numerous prestigious awards including National Science and Technology Progress Award, 1st class, 2004; two National Natural Science Awards, 2nd class, 1995 and 2001; National Innovation Award, 2nd class, 1999; etc. He is also winner of the HLHL Prize, 1998.
