Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) has 64 subjects included in the 2026 ShanghaiRanking's Best Chinese Subjects Ranking, the highest total among universities in Chinese mainland, according to the ranking released by the higher education consultancy ShanghaiRanking on October 15.
The ranking also highlighted SYSU’s strengths across several subjects. Among them, Business Administration, Biology and Mathematics are recognized as China's Top Subjects, each ranking within the top 3 percent nationally.
In addition, seven SYSU subjects rank in the top four in mainland China: Philosophy, Clinical Medicine, Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Nursing, Atmospheric Science, Marine Science, and Remote Sensing Science and Technology.
Compiled in accordance with the Graduate Education Discipline Catalog (2022) issued by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and the Ministry of Education, the 2026 ranking covers 100 first-level subjects and five professional degree categories. A total of 5,343 discipline entries from 531 universities were included.
The ShanghaiRanking's Best Chinese Subjects Ranking comes from a data monitoring platform that supports university discipline development. This system uses various key indicators of discipline competitiveness, such as talent cultivation, projects, achievements, academic papers, and high-level talent, to track and measure the performance and ranking of thousands of subjects in Chinese universities.
