As one of the sister institutions of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC), Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center (SYSUCC) has maintained a collaborative relationship with MDACC, carrying out various collaboration projects in the field of cancer care, research and education. With the establishment of Resident Standardized Training Bases by the end of 2014, more and more efforts have been made to improve the quality of teaching and training for the residents in SYSUCC. In order to further broaden the knowledge of the residents, improve their professionalism and clinical practice according to international standards, SYSUCC invited Prof. Chaan. S. Ng, Professor of Radiology at MDACC, to give seminars and lectures to the residents from the three Resident Standardized Training Bases - the Department of Radiology, the Nuclear Medicine Department and the Department of Ultrasound. During his stay in Guangzhou from the 20th to 26th of May, 2016. Prof. Chaan. S. Ng also took part in the multidisciplinary consultation for biliopancreatic cancer, communicating and exchanging his experience with experts from SYSUCC.

As a famous radiologist specializing in body imaging, Prof. Chaan. S. Ng has extensive experience in medical imaging and diagnosis in the field of hepatobiliary cancer, prostate cancer, bladder cancer, renal cancer, pancreatic cancer and lymphoma. Therefore, reading out films with the SYSUCC residents was a vital part of his teaching. In preparation for each lesson, residents from the Department of Radiology prepared some patient cases. In the class, all the residents were separated into small groups, to learn and read out films together under the supervision of Prof. Chaan. S. Ng. Quizzes were also arranged for residents from the Department of Radiology after the film reading sessions, using patient cases and films from the professor’s own clinical work, to help probe the residents’ level of understanding. Through careful analysis of the films and differential diagnosis, Prof. Chaan. S. Ng shared his precious experience with the residents including key points for medical imaging and diagnosis, scanning and imaging techniques as well as other related background information.

In addition to the seminars, Prof. Chaan. S. Ng also gave several lectures, hosted by Prof. Xie Chuanmiao and Dr. Ai Fei from the Department of Radiology. Topics included the residency training modes from the United States (mostly from the MD Anderson Cancer Center) and the United Kingdom; the latest development of Radiology in clinic and researches. The lectures were really successful, both physicians and postgraduate students from SYSUCC were greatly interested in the topics, actively engaging in the discussions.

Hosted by Prof. Li Shengping, the multidisciplinary consultation for biliopancreatic cancer was held in the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery at SYSUCC on the 26th of May. Prof. Chaan S. Ng as well as several experts from different departments of SYSUCC, namely Prof. Lin Xiaojun, Prof. Zhang Xiaoshi, Prof. Zhang Yujing, Prof. Zhang Huizhong, Prof. Zhang Rong and Prof. Pei Xiaoqing, attended the meeting. In the meeting, Prof. Chaan. S. Ng shared his experiences concerning the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, hilar cholangiocarcinoma, IgG4-related autoimmune pancreatitis and malignant obstructive jaundice, providing professional suggestions for treatment plans of the related cases together with other experts from SYSUCC. Residents from the Department of Radiology also joined this meeting.

Prof. Chaan S. Ng also made a visit to the Department of Medical Imaging and Operation Room for Interventional Therapy at SYSUCC. Listening to introductions of the infrastructure, workflow and daily medical practice in the department, the professor was impressed. He spoke highly of the professionalism and dedication of our physicians and staff.

After discussion and an ideas exchange with Prof. Chaan S. Ng during his visit, standardized training residents from SYSUCC received direct supervision from the international experienced medical expert, further broadening their knowledge, improving their way of thinking as well as medical practice in the field of medical imaging and diagnosis.

This was the first time SYSUCC has invited a foreign expert to join our standardized residency training program. In order to explore the potential opportunities for further collaboration with MDACC in this field, an agreement between SYSUCC and MDACC is currently under discussion – so that every year a clinical specialist from MDACC can come to SYSUCC to give lectures to a specific standardized residency training base, as part of an initiative to continuously improve our training programs. We sincerely hope that both institutes from China and the US could benefit from the knowledge exchange and make progress together in medical science. With significant improvement of cancer care and research practice in China in the near future, we are looking forward to offering a higher quality of medical service to cancer patients from China and all over the world.
