Professor Thomas M. van Gulik from University of Amsterdam visited Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital

On the afternoon of June 5, 2015, Prof. Thomas M. Van Gulik from the Academic Medical Center of University of Amsterdam, who is also Visiting Professor of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), visited Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital (SYSH), the second affiliated hospital of SYSU, at the invitation of Prof. Liu Chao, Deputy Director of Bureau of Affiliated Hospitals Administration at SYSU and Deputy Director of Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgical Department at SYSH.

Prof. Gulik first paid a visit to the hospital’s Exhibition Hall, where photos, instruments, documents, and journals were preserved to display the hospital’s history of up to 180 years. With the introduction of Ms Sun Jia, Director of the Exhibition Hall, he was most impressed by the hospital’s relation with Dr. Sun Yat-sen as well as its status as the Cradle of Western Medicine Education in China.

During this visit, Prof. Gulik also met and exchanged with the HPB academic team at SYSH. He learned about the hospital’s diagnosis and therapy for Hilar cholangiocarcinoma, and shared his research results in the field. As Visiting Professor of SYSU, Prof. Gulik outlined his work plan at the university and expressed hope to improve the development of HPB surgical discipline in China. He also delivered a speech as a guest expert at the First Yat-sen Summit of Biliary Tract Surgery co-hosted by SYSH on the next day.

Recently employed as Visiting Professor of SYSU, Prof. Gulik focuses on the basic and clinical research for liver diseases and liver transplantation. He has been the director of the Surgical Lab at the Academic Medial Center of University of Amsterdam since 1997, and chaired or participated in more than ten research projects including those supported by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). By far, Prof. Gulik has published more than 500 research articles in internationally renowned journals such as N Engl J Med, J Hepatol, Ann Surg, etc.
