Dr. Roy Ziegelstein, Vice Dean of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, visited SYSU

On March 23-24, 2015, Dr. Roy Ziegelstein, Vice Dean for Education of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (JHUSOM), and Dr. Zhiping Li, Director of Hepatology and Deputy Director of JHU-SYSU Collaboration Program, visited Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU).

During the two-day visit, Prof. Li Mengfeng, Vice President of SYSU, and Prof. Wei Minghai, Vice President of SYSU, met with the guests respectively. Prof. Li Mengfeng introduced SYSU’s medical education and especially focused on the eight-year medical education program and the residency training program. Prof. Wei Minghai introduced SYSU’s strategic planning in its future development. The two sides discussed the medical education collaboration between the two universities and the second phase planning of the SYSU-JHU Collaboration Program. Prof. Zhang Qi, Deputy Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange, and Prof. Wen Wushao, Director of Office of Major Projects of SYSU, also attended the meetings.

 
Meeting with the hospital leadership group of The First Affiliated Hospital
 
During their stay, Dr. Roy Ziegelstein and Dr. Zhiping Li visited The First Affiliated Hospital of SYSU and met with the hospital leadership group. Prof. Xiao Haipeng, Party Secretary and President of The First Affiliated Hospital, gave an overall introduction to the hospital. Prof. Kuang Ming, Deputy President of The First Affiliated Hospital, introduced the cultivation mechanism embedded in the hospital’s postgraduate education and residency training. Both sides expressed their willingness for future cooperation. Afterwards, the guests visited the SICU and Clinical Laboratory of The First Affiliated Hospital.

 
Visiting the Cardiovascular Department of The Third Affiliated Hospital
 
Dr. Roy Ziegelstein and Dr. Zhiping Li also visited The Third Affiliated Hospital to meet with some faculty and 8-year medical students. The meeting provided the guests with more details about SYSU’s medical education strategies implemented in the school as well as its affiliated hospitals. In addition, as an internationally recognized cardiologist, Dr. Ziegelstein paid a visit to the Cardiovascular Department of The Third Affiliated Hospital. Prof. Qian Xiaoxian, Director of Cardiovascular Department, led the tour of the department, including the ward, CCU and ultrasonic intervention room. During the tour, both sides shared their experience in department management as well as patient care and treatment. Dr. Roy Ziegelstein also joined a clinical case study discussion with the doctors and residents.

In addition to the meetings and hospital tours, Dr. Roy Ziegelstein delivered a lecture entitled “Medical Education at Johns Hopkins: How we train our next generation of physicians” on North Campus of SYSU on the afternoon of March 23. He mainly introduced JHUSOM’s medical education, residency training and teaching evaluation system. The lecture attracted around 200 students and faculty members.
