The review and approval work of the 973 Program (including Major Scientific Research Program) for 2015 has been completed. Professor Liu Yizhi from Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of Sun Yat-sen University has been supported by the Major Scientific Research Program as the chief scientist of "Understanding the underlying mechanisms of adult epithelial stem cells for in situ regeneration treatment of blinding ocular disease” project. Up till now, 6 projects of medical sciences at SYSU have received funding by the 973 Program and Major Scientific Research Program.
This project will explore the mechanisms of endogenous epithelial stem cells from molecular and cellular levels, and will build animal models and implement clinical trials. The project will have access to the research facilities and clinical resources from the State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology at Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, the Stem Cell Research Center in Tongji University School of Medicine, and State Key Laboratory of Biotherapy & 2011 Collaborative Innovation Center in Sichuan University. They have already established a team of professionals with expertise in stem cells and eye research, which will guarantee the successful implementation of the project.
