On May 29th, 2014, the Sleep Breathing Disorder Center of The Sixth Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University (SH-SYSU) hosted a seminar on new progresses in diagnosis and treatment of OSAHS, and a ceremony for appointing Prof. B. Tucker Woodson, President of International Sleep Surgical Society, as a visiting professor.
The attendants of the conference included Prof. B. Tucker Woodson, President of International Sleep Surgical Society; Prof. Wang Jianping, Executive Vice President of Sun Yet-sen University; Prof. Xu Geng, Vice Chairman of Subspecialty Group of Rhinology, Society of Otorhinolaryngology, Chinese Medical Association; Prof. Li Taoping, Chairman of Guangdong Academy of Sleep Medicine; Prof. Wang Lei, Vice President of SH-SYSU; Prof. Xie Rushi, Director of Integrated Department, SH-SYSU; and Prof. Zhang Xiangmin, Director of the Sleep Breathing Disorder Center, SH-SYSU. The conference also attracted almost two hundred medical personnel in Guangdong province in the fields of sleep, ENT, respiratory medicine and neurology.

The conference was chaired by Prof. Zhang Xiangmin and divided into three sections: the certificate of appointment was presented to Prof. B. Tucker Woodson; a lecture was given on new progresses in diagnosis and treatment of OSAHS; the feasibility study report of the advanced, minimally invasive technology about stretching technique on dorsum of tongue, and the clinical trial of GCP was launched.
First, Prof. Wang Lei addressed the conference. He expressed his warm congratulations on the success of the meeting, and welcomed Prof. Woodson to join SH-SYSU. Prof. Xu Geng and Prof. Li Taoping made a short speech respectively. In the warm applause, Prof. Wang Jianping presented the certificate of appointment to Prof. Woodson and appointed him as a visiting professor at the sleep center of SH-SYSU.

Then, Prof. Woodson lectured on two topics —“Integrating a Better Understanding of Anatomy to Improve Pharyngeal Surgery for Sleep Apnea” and "Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation for Obstructive Sleep Apnea". Firstly, he elaborated the treatment of OSAHS at home and abroad and introduced the surgeries of OSA depending on the anatomy of different cases. Next, he talked about a latest treatment for OSAHS - hypoglossal nerve stimulator implants, which has been formally put into use abroad and doctors at home still know little about it. Prof. Woodson brought new ideas about surgical treatment for doctors of Surgery for Sleep-Disordered Breathing. At last, Prof. Woodson answered questions raised by the audience in detail.
In the last section of the conference, Prof. Zhang Xiangmin showed the latest minimally invasive technology about stretching technique on dorsum of tongue for the OSAHS patients who were mainly mild-to-moderate level, and reported the feasibility study. The surgical method, the advantages and the feasibility were explained. He introduced that this surgical method has been approved by the hospital ethics committee, and is about to launch the clinical trial of GCP.
