On the morning of April 30, the Guangdong International Workers’ Day Celebration & Model Worker Commendation Conference was held in Guangzhou. Professor Wang Shenming from The First Affiliated Hospital and Professor Liu Yizhi from Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center were awarded “National May 1 Labor Medal”. The Breast Tumor Center of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital won the honorary title of “Guangdong Pioneer Worker”.
Brief introduction to Professor Wang Shenming:
Wang Shenming, M.D., Ph.D., professor of Surgery, doctoral supervisor, is President of The First Affiliated Hospital, SYSU. He is receiving the subsidy of government of the State Council.
Dr. Wang is the academic leader and chief expert of department of vascular surgery, thyroid and breast surgery in The First Affiliated Hospital. He is also the vice president of Chinese Society of Vascular Surgery and president of Guangdong Committee of Breast Cancer Society in Chinese anti-cancer association. Meanwhile, he is the vice-chairman of Chinese College of Surgeons and Guangdong Medical Association, as well as the member of International Society of Surgery, International Society of Vascular Diseases, International Society of Endocrine Surgery, Asian Society of Vascular Surgery, Asian Society of Endocrine Surgery and American College of Surgeons Fellowship. Dr. Wang is the chief editor of
Chinese Archives of General Surgery and
Chinese Journal of Vascular Surgery. In addition, he is also the deputy chief editor or executive editorial member of several core journals such as
Chinese Medical Journal and
Chinese Journal of Surgery. Dr. Wang is the consultant expert of Chinese Central Bureau of Health as well as Guangdong and Guangzhou Health Office.
In recent years, Dr. Wang has published more than 200 academic theses in Chinese core journals and foreign core journals. 60 of which have been collected by Science Citation Index (Dr. Wang was the first author or corresponding author in 40 theses). He has implemented 2 projects which were supported by grants from National High-tech Research and Development Program of China (863 Program), 9 projects which were supported by grants from National Natural Science Foundation of China and 19 provincial scientific research projects. Dr. Wang is also the chief editor or translator of 9 monographs as well as the editorial member of 30 monographs. In 2007, he was the chief editor or editorial member of the Chinese undergraduate medical textbooks and graduate medical textbooks.
Dr. Wang received several awards for achievement of science and technology from Chinese Ministry of Education, Chinese Medical Association and so on. He also had 5 patents of invention.
Brief introduction to Professor Liu Yizhi:
Dr. Liu Yizhi is the Director of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-sen University as well as the Director of the Eye Hospital of Guangzhou. He is a professor of ophthalmology and a Ph.D. supervisor. His work has earned him the prestigious special government allowance of the State Council. He is also currently a standing committee member of Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO), a committee member of the Chinese Ophthalmological Society (COS), Deputy Director of the Cataract and Intraocular Lenses Division of COS, and a committee member of the Guangdong Ophthalmological Society.
Dr. Liu is the Co-Editor-in-Chief of
Molecular Vision, Associate Editor-in-Chief of
Current Molecular Medicine. He has been working in the field of medicine for 29 years. He is recognized as one of the pioneer ophthalmologists in China who perform phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation. He has carried out approximately 200, 000 surgical operations for cataract patients home and abroad. His particular specialty is the diagnosis and management of complicated cataracts of different etiology. He is highly recognized both nationally and internationally for his excellent surgical skills. Due to his contributions, he is currently in charge of the Chinese Ministry of Health Key Clinical Program, the Chinese National Natural Science Foundation and the Natural Science Foundation’s Key Program in Guangdong.
More than 30 PhD students who now specialize in basic and clinical research into the prevention and treatment of cataract have been mentored by Dr. Liu. Most of these students are currently conducting research in the areas of lens development, lens regeneration, modulation of developmental genes, lens proteomics, (the mechanism of prevention and treatment of after-cataract), intraocular effects of phacoemulsification, and development of (the) intraocular lens.
Dr. Liu is the original or corresponding author of more than 70 ophthalmic articles, including 37 articles with a science citation index. He has been awarded six science and technology progress awards, such as the 1st prize of the National Award for Science and Technology Progress and the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award, as well as five utility model patents, which provide innovative ways for the prevention and treatment of cataract. He has won more than ten honorary awards and titles, including the Arthur Lim Award by Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO), the National Labor Medal, Chinese Young Science and Technology Award, the National Youth Star of Medical Science and Technology, the Chinese Government Award of Excellence in Healthcare, the Chinese 100 Excellent Youth Volunteers, the Chinese Ministry of Health Outstanding Youth Scientist, Guangdong Provincial Top Ten Outstanding Youth Award, Guangdong Provincial Outstanding Contributing Expert, Guangdong Provincial Outstanding Youth Scientist, Guangdong Provincial May First Labor Day Medal and Guangdong Provincial Distinguished Honorary Volunteer Award.
